Modern Digital Portraits & Illustrations
Using my iPad and Procreate, I transform photos into modern portraits. From textured oil pastel styles to clean, minimalist lines, we can create something that fits your space or social media.
This is my second attempt at a digital portrait using an oil pastel brush. I'm still figuring it out, but I'm having a blast with the messy texture and bold strokes this style allows.
My first experiment with a digital oil pastel brush. It was a fun challenge to try a new style and medium, and I'm always excited about the process of learning and creating.
An inverted view of my first digital oil pastel experiment. Sometimes looking at a piece from a different perspective helps in the creative process.
A digital portrait practice session on my iPad. This piece is done in a monochromatic pink, focusing on smooth blending and capturing the highlights on the face.
Another digital portrait practice piece. I was exploring hair textures and the subtle play of light and shadow on the face in a single color scheme.
A profile portrait created digitally. This was a study in form and style, experimenting with sharp lines and bold accessories to create a high-fashion look.
A quick digital sketch using a multi-color brush. This was a spontaneous session on the iPad, just letting the lines and colors flow to create an expressive portrait.
The line art version of a quick digital sketch. Even simple lines can convey a lot of emotion and character, and I enjoy this kind of minimalist practice.
Just a quick sketch on the iPad to keep the creative ideas flowing. Sometimes the simplest, upside-down doodles can spark a new idea.
Another quick digital line sketch. Practicing different angles and expressions like this helps me refine my skills for more detailed portrait commissions.
About Modern Digital Portraits & Illustrations
When we start a digital commission, we first settle on the mood, whether you want something clean and minimalist or messy and painterly. I work primarily on the iPad, which allows me to experiment with textures that aren't possible with traditional charcoal. Because these are high-resolution digital files, they are perfect for printing as wall art or using on your digital profiles.
Working digitally gives us a level of flexibility that physical media cannot match. You aren't tied to a single look; we can iterate on colors and textures until the piece feels right.
My Process We begin with a reference photo. I look for the defining features, like the shape of the eyes or the way a smile lands, and translate that into a digital illustration. You will get to review a draft with one round of minor feedback, ensuring the final piece captures exactly what you are looking for.
Choosing Your Style
- Digital Oil Pastel: If you like texture and bold, expressive strokes, this style mimics real media. It is vibrant and feels less like a computer-generated image.
- Monochromatic: A single color palette creates a strong, modern look. This is great for social media icons or simple, elegant wall prints.
- Minimalist Line Art: Sometimes less is more. Clean, sharp lines can capture character just as well as detailed shading.
Why Digital? You do not have to worry about shipping, and you receive high-resolution files (300 DPI) in PNG, JPEG, and PDF. You can print these on anything from canvas to high-quality paper, or keep them as digital keepsakes.
Technical Specs I use an iPad with an Apple Pencil and Procreate. I deliver files in both CMYK (for printing) and RGB (for screens). Whether it is a gift or a piece for your home, I ensure the resolution is high enough to stand up to professional printing.
