About The Art of the Drape: Behind the Scenes & Classes

You do not just sit and watch in my classes. Whether you are in my studio or joining online, we work on mannequins and live models together until your pleats are crisp and secure. I focus on the 'gundu' (fluffy) pleats and side-sculpting techniques that make a saree look elegant, not just a fabric wrapped around you. If you are a beginner, we start from the very first tuck, ensuring you leave with the confidence to handle any silk or chiffon without feeling stiff or pinned down.

Draping a saree is more than just wrapping fabric, it is a skill that blends tradition with personal style. My classes are designed to be entirely hands-on because I believe that is the only way to truly learn. We cover everything from the basic Nivi drape to complex regional styles like the Coorgi, Bengali, and the traditional Iyer Madisar (9-yard style with just 6 yards).

What we cover in my masterclasses:

  • Foundation Skills: We start with the basics of ironing and selecting the right in-skirt or shapewear. A smooth drape begins underneath the saree, and I teach you how to choose the right foundation for a flawless silhouette.
  • Pleating Techniques: You will learn to calculate pleats based on your height and hip size rather than using generic folds. This includes my signature fluffy 'gundu' pleat technique that adds volume and richness to heavy silks.
  • Pinning Architecture: I teach a blind-pinning method using rust-proof safety pins. The goal is to keep the saree secure and comfortable enough to dance in, without the pins ever being visible.
  • Beyond the Drape: My goal is to empower you. If you are looking to turn this into a profession, I also include real, practical marketing tips on how to find clients and manage bridal bookings, based on my experience in the industry.

Whether you are a college student, a housewife, or a budding artist, you do not need prior experience. If you have the passion, I will provide the guidance. My studio in Basaveshwar Nagar, Bengaluru, is always open for those who prefer learning in person, but I also offer online sessions that have helped students from all over, including Mangalore and Mumbai.
