About Outfit & Style Showcase
When you are dancing, your outfit is part of the choreography. For my Garba and sangeet routines, I focus on skirts with the right flare and weight. You need something that twirls perfectly but is not so heavy that it drags you down during a fast step. It is all about finding that balance between looking dramatic and staying comfortable enough to nail your performance.
Dancing in Style
Performance wear is completely different from regular party wear. When I select an outfit for a sangeet or Garba event, I always prioritize 'danceability.' A heavy lehenga might look great in photos, but if you cannot move your legs freely, your performance will suffer. Here is how I approach styling for dance:
-
The Twirl Factor: For Garba and high-energy Bollywood tracks, I love outfits that have a wide flare. When you spin, the fabric needs to move with you, not against you. Always test your outfit with a few practice spins before the final event.
-
Saree vs. Lehenga: If you are performing in a saree, proper pinning is non-negotiable. I use extra safety pins to secure the pallu so you can jump and move without worrying about it slipping. For lehengas, I recommend a slightly higher waistband to keep the skirt in place during faster movements.
-
Accessorizing for Movement: Heavy jewelry can sometimes become a distraction. I suggest wearing statement pieces that are secure. If your necklace is too heavy, it will swing around when you dance, which can be annoying. Sometimes, less is more.
Your Performance Look
Whether we are going for a dramatic traditional look or a fun, fusion vibe, the goal is to make you feel like a star. I often suggest mixing traditional blouses with lighter skirts to get that perfect mix of 'deshi' and 'modern.'
If you are worried about your outfit choice, feel free to show me your options during our rehearsals. We can figure out how to adjust the choreography or the outfit itself so you feel confident and ready to own the dance floor. Ho jaega!
