My Evidence-Based Skincare Philosophy
Skincare is a journey, not a sprint. I believe in replacing marketing trends with peer-reviewed science, safe ingredients, and professional patience.
When I evaluate a skincare product, I first look at the active ingredient and its concentration. I also assess its purpose and whether it contains any ingredients that could potentially sensitize the skin.
I always research before buying. I prioritize peer-reviewed studies on ingredients over biased company studies, because for me, understanding the chemistry and proven efficacy is non-negotiable.
A high price tag does not always mean a better product. While effective active ingredients cost money, basic cleansers and moisturizers can be very affordable and effective. Efficacy and safety always come first.
I enjoy trying new products, but I introduce only one new item at a time. I give it at least 4-6 weeks to properly assess if it's truly working for my skin before making a final judgment.
I have my own red flags when it comes to ingredients. I am cautious with things like propylene glycol and try to avoid artificial fragrances and colors, as they can be common irritants.
This was a look back at my skincare favorites from 2020. Sharing what works for me is part of my passion, and I love hearing about the products others have discovered and enjoyed.
Here is my personal review of the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser. I believe in sharing my honest experience with products, explaining the key ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid that make it a great choice for barrier repair.
During winter or when using prescription retinoids, a gentle cleanser is key. Here are some of my go-to recommendations that cleanse effectively without stripping the skin's essential lipid barrier.
My first tip for winter skincare is to switch to a creamy or balm cleanser. Foaming washes can be too drying when the air is cold and lacks humidity, so a gentler option helps maintain your skin's barrier.
For winter, I recommend switching from a lightweight lotion to a richer cream. Your skin needs more support from emollients and occlusives to stay hydrated in low-humidity conditions.
About My Personal Skincare Philosophy
I advocate for a slow, thoughtful approach to your routine. You will rarely find me recommending a ten-step regimen because simple, effective ingredients are usually enough to repair the skin barrier. I personally test only one product at a time for at least six weeks before forming a judgment, and I suggest you do the same to save your skin from unnecessary irritation.
Prioritizing Ingredients Over Marketing
When I evaluate products, I look past the packaging and the price tag. Efficacy is non-negotiable. I prioritize active ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide because they are backed by clinical data, not just advertising budgets. If a product contains potential irritants like artificial fragrances, heavy alcohols, or certain preservatives like propylene glycol, I skip it entirely.
Seasonal Adjustments for Bangalore Weather
Your skincare routine shouldn't be static. Living in Bangalore, we face varied humidity levels, and your skin needs change accordingly. During the drier months or when using prescription retinoids, I shift my advice toward creamy or balm-based cleansers. Foaming washes can be too harsh when your skin barrier is already compromised. I also recommend switching from lightweight lotions to richer creams containing occlusives to lock in moisture, especially during the winter.
The Lip Care Rule
Your lips are prone to dryness and often suffer from the wrong ingredients. I steer my patients away from balms containing camphor, menthol, or cinnamon flavorings, which can cause more harm than good by stripping moisture. Instead, I suggest nourishing, protective ingredients like shea butter, castor seed oil, or white petroleum jelly.
Clinical Oversight in HSR Layout
While I love sharing tips, skincare is highly individual. What works for me may not work for you, especially if you have existing conditions like acne or melasma. My consultations at my clinic in HSR Layout, Bengaluru, focus on assessing your current products against your skin goals. We will audit your ingredients, filter out unsafe chemicals, and build a routine that actually supports your skin health.
