Sufi Kathak: A Soulful Blend
A meditative, rhythmic dialogue between Kathak's classical footwork and the deep, spiritual melodies of Sufi music, brought to life by a live ensemble.
The announcement for my Sufi Kathak performance in Kerala, featuring the full ensemble of musicians who collaborated to create a magical evening.
About this collection
This is a full-scale concert production, distinct from my standard dance sets. Because we perform to live Sufi music—often improvising in the moment—we require a ninety-minute sound check before the event to properly balance the acoustic ghungroo footwork against the live tabla and sarangi.
Sufi Kathak is where the rhythmic precision of Kathak meets the meditative, poetic soul of Sufi music. It is less about rigid storytelling and more about a shared spiritual journey. When I perform this, it is not a pre-recorded sequence. It is a live conversation between the dancer and the musicians.
My ensemble usually features a four-piece orchestra, including a vocalist, tabla player, and harmonium or sarangi player. We delve into Sufi Kalams and Ghazals, allowing the dance to become an extension of the melody. You will see improvisation—what we call Upaj—where the rhythm of the footwork and the notes of the music challenge and complement each other in real-time.
This production is designed for intimate concert halls or spiritual gatherings where the audience can fully absorb the nuances. Because this relies heavily on live acoustic quality, it differs from our standard dance sets. We need a proper technical rider, including high-quality instrument mics and specialized floor mics to capture the crisp sound of the ghungroos. If you are planning a concert or a cultural evening, this format offers an immersive experience that moves beyond traditional stage choreography.
Sohini Karanth
Kathak has been my world since I was twelve. My school, Sāttvatī, is where we pass these rhythms down, but Sufi Kathak is where I find my own peace. When I step on stage with my live musicians, the dance feels less like a performance and more like a prayer.
