Handcrafted Kokedama Moss Balls
No pots, no soil mess, just plants suspended in art. These Japanese-style moss balls are perfect for desks or hanging, handmade with love at my nursery.
This Philodendron kokedama is a great example of the form. The heart-shaped leaves look beautiful against the natural texture of the moss ball, making it a simple yet elegant piece of living decor for any tabletop.
About Kokedama: The Art of Moss Balls
These aren't just plants wrapped in a ball of mud. I use premium Pindstrup Peat Moss to secure the root system, binding it tight with natural jute twine. It creates a clean, soil-free setup that stays neat on your table, provided you follow the simple bottom-soaking watering method I recommend.
Kokedama is a Japanese planting style, but for me, it is just a practical way to bring nature indoors without the usual dirt. I start by selecting hardy varieties like Syngonium or Philodendron, then I strip the roots, pack them in a moisture-retaining moss mix, and bind them by hand.
Why it works
- No spills: Since there is no loose soil, you won't find dirt on your office desk or side table.
- Minimalist: It looks like a floating piece of art, not just another plastic pot.
- Portable: You can easily move it around or even hang it up if you are short on surface space.
How to look after it
- Watering: Do not just spray the surface. When the ball feels light, dunk the whole thing in a bowl of water for 5 minutes. Let the excess drain out, then put it back on its dish.
- Light: Most of these are happy with indirect light, which makes them perfect for rooms that do not get direct sun. If you are unsure where to place it, just let me know the lighting in your room and I will pick the right plant variety that will actually survive in your space.
