Surajkund Mela Landscaping: The Reality of the Setup
From sunrise soil prep to night-shift planting, this is what it takes to turn an empty fairground into a green landscape. See how we manage large-scale events.
This is my morning ritual during the Surajkund Mela setup. I'm on-site at sunrise, overseeing the watering and checking the progress of the landscaping work across the entire fairground.
A quick tour from my point of view during the setup phase. You can see the scale of the event grounds we need to cover, from installing sprinklers and watering systems to placing plants along pathways and near the gates.
This is what it takes. Long hours and sleepless nights on the ground are part of the job when you're working on a project of this scale. It's all about the grind.
Here's where the vision starts to take shape. I'm on the ground personally marking out the patterns for flower beds and green spaces according to the landscape plan before we begin planting.
The final result of our hard work. This custom-built bamboo treehouse, complete with integrated lighting, became a major attraction at the mela, showing how creative landscaping can transform a space.
The completed entrance gate at night. Our landscaping work, including the raised beds and plant selections, was designed to enhance the grandeur of the main gate and welcome thousands of visitors.
About Surajkund Mela: The Making Of
Building an event like the Surajkund Mela isn't just about putting plants in the ground. It’s about the long hours, the soil quality, and solving problems on the fly. Whether we are setting up a massive gate display or a small balcony garden, the process remains the same: we get the base right, pick plants that can handle the local weather, and make sure everything is sturdy enough to last.
Behind the Scenes at the Mela
People see the finished gate or the treehouse, but they don't see the nights spent working on the irrigation or the specific soil mix needed to keep plants alive in high-traffic areas. When I'm at the Surajkund Mela, my focus is on survival and impact.
We don't just 'decorate'. We do actual horticultural softscaping. That means:
- Soil Prep: Using Neem Kernel Cake and Vermicompost to protect against pests before the crowds arrive.
- Sun & Wind Tolerance: Choosing varieties like Croton Petra and Bougainvillea that can actually survive the open-air heat.
- Logistics: Heavy-duty hauling of soil, plants, and drums to mark out pathways and green beds.
Can You Do This at Home?
You don't need a fairground to get the same results. The methods we use for the mela are actually what I bring to your home. If you want a terrace or balcony that doesn't wilt in a week, we need to focus on what goes under the plant. That means lightweight, nutrient-dense soil mixes designed for structural safety on balconies, and proper drainage setups that stop your plants from drowning.
I’m not about selling you a look that fades. I’m about setting up a garden that grows. If you're tired of plants that die after you buy them, we should talk about how to get your space ready.
