Advanced Dog Obedience and Impulse Control
Advanced obedience is not about control, it is about communication. I help you build a dog that listens, even when distractions are high.
Preparation is everything in dog sports. This is Amon, a Belgian Malinois, practicing his focused heeling and rapid position changes as we prepare for his PSA (Protection Sports Association) title.
A focused heel is the cornerstone of advanced obedience. This German Shepherd is demonstrating perfect attention and position while walking on a loose leash, staying connected to the handler.
This black German Shepherd shows intense focus during a heeling exercise. My training develops a strong work ethic and a desire for the dog to work with you as a team.
About Advanced Obedience & Control
Obedience is not just about the commands a dog knows; it is about how they perform when the world gets noisy. I focus on 'proofing' behaviors, which means teaching your dog to hold a stay or come when called even when there are distractions like other dogs, food, or traffic nearby. If you are tired of your dog ignoring you the moment you step outside, we need to fix the foundation of your communication.
Advanced training is the bridge between a pet that listens at home and a partner you can trust in public. Most owners struggle because they teach commands in a quiet room but expect them to work at a busy park. That does not work.
My approach is rooted in professional sport conditioning. We work on:
- Distraction Proofing: We move training from the living room to streets, parks, and high-traffic areas to build real-world reliability.
- Impulse Control: Learning to ignore food, toys, and other dogs is the key to off-leash freedom.
- Engagement: We use clicker shaping and operant conditioning to ensure the dog actually wants to listen to you, not just follows orders out of fear.
This is not about drilling a dog until they are robotic. It is about building a bond where the dog looks to you for guidance instead of making their own decisions. Whether you have a high-drive Malinois or a gentle Indie, the principles of clear communication remain the same. We also include a dedicated handover phase at the end of the program where I coach you on handling techniques. You are the one living with the dog, so you need to be the one giving the commands.
