Practical Everyday Styling Tips to Define Your Look
I have spent 20 years teaching people how to dress for who they actually are, not for trends. These tips are the foundation of my practice, from color therapy to smart shopping.
Your signature style is so much more than the clothes you wear; it's an expression of who you are, lived through all five senses. It's in the colors you choose, the textures you love, and the little details that bring you joy. This is the core philosophy I teach: style isn't just worn, it's lived.
Here's a simple yet powerful tip I learned from my mom, who did her PhD on the correlation between music and colors. To stand out, wear colors that contrast with your environment. On a gloomy monsoon day with lots of browns and greens, a pop of yellow or fuchsia will make you look and feel fresher.
"What's my body type?" is a question I get all the time. Forget about comparing yourself to fruits online. My approach is about celebrating what you love about yourself. In my workshops, I teach you how to identify your best features and use 'focal points' to draw attention to them, so you can dress with confidence and feel great in your own skin, no hiding required.
Sales are the perfect time to upgrade your wardrobe, not just accumulate more things. Instead of buying four cheap tops, invest in one high quality piece from a better brand that's on sale. I also explain why investing in timeless accessories is one of the smartest style decisions you can make, as they can elevate any outfit.
Festive dressing can be tricky, especially if you're not comfortable with very bright colors. My advice is to embrace themes and India's beautiful jewel tones, but in a way that feels authentic to you. You can add a pop of color through a single accessory, a dupatta, or embroidery on a neutral outfit to feel festive without feeling overwhelmed.
Shoes have the power to completely change your personality and posture. In this radio discussion, I talk about the importance of choosing shoes for comfort and quality, not just looks. Your entire body is supported by your feet, and if you're not comfortable, it will show on your face, no matter how stylish the shoe is.
Shoes are an investment, and they need care to last. I've had expensive shoes crack because they weren't maintained properly. Here, I share practical tips on shoe care, from understanding functionality and material to using shoe spas and wax polish, especially in humid climates like Mumbai. Take care of your shoes, and they will take care of you.
Personal style is all about what makes you feel comfortable and confident. For me, t-shirts with small, hard-to-read text are a no. It creates an awkward social dynamic. This is an example of the small, personal choices that define your unique style rules. What are your thoughts on this?
About Everyday Styling Tips
Most people waste energy trying to hide their perceived flaws, but that kills your confidence. Instead, I teach the 'focal point' method. If you love your hands, wear statement rings to draw the eye there. If you love your eyes, choose necklines that highlight your face. It is about celebrating what you have, not mourning what you do not.
Style is a language, and you are already fluent, you just might be using the wrong grammar. When we talk about everyday styling, we are not talking about runway trends that disappear in a week. We are talking about how you wake up, get dressed, and walk out the door feeling like yourself.
My approach is built on three pillars:
-
The 5 Senses: It is not just about what you see in the mirror. It is about the texture of the fabric against your skin (touch), the confidence you feel when you smell your favorite fragrance, or the subtle sounds of your accessories as you move. When you engage your senses, you feel more grounded in your outfit.
-
Color Therapy: Do not let the weather dictate your gloom. If it is a rainy day in Mumbai and the world outside is brown and grey, do not wear those colors. Throw on a bright fuchsia or a sharp yellow. My mom, a color theorist, taught me that contrast makes you look fresher, not just to others, but to yourself.
-
Smart Shopping: Stop buying four mediocre tops because they were on sale. Buy one high-quality piece that fits your body type. I see too many clients with wardrobes full of things they 'might' wear. We clear that out. We identify your focal points, clean up the clutter, and build a system that makes getting ready in the morning the easiest part of your day.
Real style is not magic. It is just paying attention to the small choices you make every single day.
