Bonsai Artistry: The Haiku Project
Creating a bonsai garden on a rooftop is about choosing resilient, graceful trees that thrive against the city skyline. We selected this collection for Haiku, Hyderabad, to bring a quiet, artistic rhythm to their terrace.
A key part of the Haiku project was selecting bonsai trees that would thrive on a rooftop and complement the city view. This Ficus bonsai, set in a wide, rustic bowl, creates a beautiful silhouette against the Hyderabad skyline.
This image showcases the variety of planters used at Haiku. I combined rustic wooden stands with modern, spherical white pots and low stone-like bowls to create different levels and textures within the bonsai garden.
This video gives you a feel for the complete bonsai collection at Haiku. Each tree was carefully chosen and placed to contribute to the overall serene and artistic atmosphere of the restaurant's terrace.
About Bonsai Artistry: The Haiku Project
Growing bonsai on a rooftop requires a fine balance between art and resilience. For the Haiku project, we focused on hardy species like Ficus and Jade that can handle the local climate, pairing them with rustic log planters and stone bowls to add texture without overwhelming the terrace. It is about finding that stillness amidst the city buzz.
The Philosophy of the Haiku Project
Designing a bonsai garden for a commercial space like Haiku means balancing aesthetics with durability. We wanted the rooftop to feel like a pause button; a place where the city traffic noise fades into the background.
Our Approach
- Hardy Selection: Rooftops are unforgiving environments with direct sun and strong winds. We selected semi-mature Ficus Microcarpa and Jade for their structural integrity and ability to age gracefully in outdoor settings.
- Textured Containers: We avoided standard pots. By mixing raw, treated wooden log planters with smooth, stone-finish bowls, we created a visual dialogue between natural decay and modern minimalism.
- Strategic Bedding: Using river pebbles and slate stepping stones grounds the visual composition and helps retain moisture around the root systems, which is a crucial detail for rooftop survival.
Can you have this at home?
Whether it is a balcony or a farmhouse, a bonsai corner works wherever you want a focal point. We handle the design, the sourcing of mature specimens, and the substrate mixing. Our process is strictly custom; we do not believe in set templates because every space has a different light profile and kahani (story) to tell. If you have a corner that feels empty, let us see if a bonsai installation can change that.
