Skincare Myths and Science: Your Questions Answered
Viral trends are not a skincare routine. I help you cut through the marketing noise to find products and treatments that actually work for your specific skin type.
The Nykaa sale can be very tempting, but not every popular product is good for your skin. As a dermatologist, I often de-influence viral skincare that contains heavy fragrances or lacks proven ingredients. Before you buy, make sure a product is right for your specific skin type.
About Your Skincare Questions, Answered
Most viral skincare products are marketed to feel good, not to heal your skin. Before you buy that trending scrub or face wash, look for proven active ingredients and avoid hidden fragrances that can trigger acne or contact dermatitis.
Stop Buying the Hype
Social media is great for entertainment, but it is often a disaster for your skin health. I see patients every day who have damaged their skin barriers by using 'trending' products that contain harsh physical exfoliants or heavy fragrances.
Why Ingredients Matter
Skin is not one-size-fits-all. A product that works for an influencer with oily skin might cause severe irritation for someone with dry or sensitive skin. When you are looking at ingredients, ignore the fancy packaging and look for:
- Active Concentrations: Does it have enough niacinamide or retinol to actually work, or is it just 'fairy dust' marketing?
- Fragrance content: If the first few ingredients include 'parfum' or 'fragrance', proceed with caution. These are common culprits for contact dermatitis.
- Exfoliation Type: Physical scrubs often create micro-tears in the skin. Chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs are generally safer and more effective when used in the correct concentration.
The 'Natural' Trap
Just because a product is labeled 'natural' or 'herbal' does not mean it is safe. Essential oils and botanical extracts are potent chemicals. I have treated many patients for allergic reactions caused by 'natural' face masks.
