Mastering Blow-Dries and Curl Styling Techniques
Blow-dries aren't just about heat. I teach you how to use your brush for volume, movement, and a finish that actually lasts.
What's the difference between a straight blow-dry and an in-blow-dry? I explain how to use a round brush to fold the ends inward, creating body and volume.
For an in-blow-dry, you can create volume by lifting the brush at the roots. I show how to get a good grip on the hair to ensure a smooth, polished finish.
To create a smooth in-blow-dry, you need to polish the hair from roots to ends. I demonstrate how to fold the ends inward while keeping a slight distance between the dryer and the brush to protect the hair.
The technique for inward, outward, or spiral blow-dries is similar; only the direction changes. Here, I show how to use the cool shot button on the dryer to freeze the shape and make the style last longer.
This is the final result of an in-blow-dry. This technique gives a roundish shape that makes the base of the hair look heavier, which is great for U-cuts or layered styles.
Here I start a tutorial on how to do out-curls. This style works best on medium-length hair with layers, and I explain the importance of having the right brush size.
For tight, long-lasting curls, a smaller brush is better. I also explain that the hair should be slightly damp to achieve a smooth blow-dry with good hold.
Smoothing the roots is a very important step for any blow-dry. Here, I demonstrate how to smooth the roots and mid-lengths before starting to create the out-curls at the ends.
For out-curls, the focus is on polishing the hair and folding just the ends. I show how to repeat the motion to ensure the hair is smooth and the curl is well-defined.
After heating the hair to create a curl, it's important to let it cool down to set the shape. I demonstrate how to either use the cool shot button or hold the shape on the brush for a moment.
About Styling: From Blow-Dries to Curls
Ever wonder why your blow-dry loses shape in an hour? Most students focus too much on heat and forget the cool shot button. After you heat the hair to shape it, you must blast it with cool air before pulling the brush away. This freezes the style in place. In my classes, we don't just watch; we practice this until you understand exactly how to lock in a volume or a curl.
Styling is the final step that connects a haircut to a finished look. Whether you are aiming for smooth in-curls that add weight to a U-cut or precise out-curls for layered styles, the technique is about control.
Why Technique Beats Heat
It is not just about the dryer. Your brush choice decides the outcome. If you want tight, long-lasting curls, you need a smaller brush. For volume and bounce, a medium-large round brush is your best friend. I teach my students to move away from the 'flat' look and understand how to lift at the roots to create body.
The Process We Follow:
- Sectioning: If your sectioning is messy, your blow-dry will never look polished. We practice clean, controlled sections first.
- Polishing: The brush must move smoothly through the hair. Think of it like polishing wood—the more consistent your motion, the smoother the hair falls.
- Heat Management: We learn to maintain a consistent distance between the dryer and the brush to protect the hair, while using the nozzle to direct the airflow exactly where needed.
At my academy, we move you from dummies to real models quickly. You will learn to handle different hair textures, adjust your brush size for different lengths, and create styles that your future clients will actually pay for. If you want to stop guessing and start creating, this is where you learn how.
