Sabse important cheez? Basics. If your sectioning isn't clean, your haircut will never sit right. Let's build your foundation properly.

The most important thing to control hair is sectioning. I always insist that my students master their basic sections, like this clean center parting, because it's the foundation for any haircut, color, or style.

To create a clean back center parting, I teach students to place a finger at the crown and draw a straight line down. Checking the hairline on both sides ensures the parting is perfectly even.

This is how you create a basic side parting. I show how to draw a clean vertical line from the top of the head to just behind the ear, isolating the side section neatly.

We use three main lines in hairdressing. The first is the horizontal or flat line, which I'm demonstrating here. This sectioning is used for everything from root touch-ups to blunt haircuts.

The second type of line we use is a diagonal line, which means a slanted line. I explain that this can be a diagonal forward or diagonal back section, used for various cutting and coloring techniques.

The third line is the vertical line, or standing line. Here, I show how to take a vertical section out of a horizontal one, a technique commonly used for layering.

It's the small details that make a big difference. Here, I am correcting a student on how to properly tie the collar and cape before a haircut to ensure client comfort and professionalism.

Client comfort is key. I'm teaching a student the correct way to wash a client's hair, ensuring they are comfortable and that the stylist maintains a professional and pleasant presence.

This is a live haircutting class in session. Before any cutting begins, we start with the basics: proper sectioning on a mannequin head.

In our 3-month fast-track course, you learn all the essential skills, starting with the absolute basics like sectioning. Here, a student practices on a mannequin.

About Fundamentals: Sectioning & Prep

You might think sectioning is just about moving hair, but it's really about geometry and angle control. If you hold your comb at the wrong degree—like 45 degrees for a center parting—your lines will go crooked. I teach my students exactly how to place their fingers and comb so the section is 'one-go' clean, meaning you don't have to stop and fix your lines halfway through a haircut or color application.
