Music for Social Awareness: Empowering Youth Through Song
We believe a song has the power to flip a world. Through our 'Be A Jagrik' sessions, we turn complex constitutional rights into lyrics, turning classrooms into spaces where civic curiosity and melody meet.
In our 'Be A Jagrik' session, we use music and discussion to explore constitutional rights and duties. Here, facilitators lead a conversation, creating a space for youth to express themselves freely.

This mind map, created during a songwriting workshop, brainstorms words related to being a 'Jagrik' (aware citizen). This is the first step in co-creating an anthem of awareness and empowerment.

About Music for Social Awareness
We do not just lecture on civics. In our songwriting workshops, participants turn fundamental rights into catchy lyrics, often starting with a blank whiteboard and ending with an anthem. It takes about six weeks of collaborative jamming and peer-led discussions before a group goes from hesitant silence to performing their own message of awareness.
Our approach to social awareness isn't about rote learning. At our South Extension studio and across our partner government schools, we use the 'Be A Jagrik' framework to make the Indian Constitution accessible. We believe that if you can sing it, you can understand it.
We use 'Samvidhan' game cards to spark debates and whiteboards to map out emotions and civic duties. It is a space where dowry, gender roles, and religion are not taboo topics; they are subjects for open, respectful dialogue.
Participants often start with hesitation, feeling like these topics are too heavy or not for them. By the end of our sessions, that hesitation is replaced by the confidence to lead. We aren't just teaching music; we are training citizens. This work is part of a larger ecosystem with VartaLeap and Commutiny, reaching thousands of young changemakers across India. Whether it is through a guitar strum or a lyric sheet, we want every participant to realize that their voice matters. We believe that when hearts feel safe, real learning blooms.
