Welcome to plant parenthood! I am here to help you get started with simple, practical advice that keeps your green babies happy and thriving in your home.

Here are 5 essential plant care tips to help you take care of your new plant babies, whether you're decking out your room or your office.

Tip 1: Don't overwater your plants. One of the most important things to remember is to check how much water your specific plant requires and how often.

Tip 2: Position them right. Pay attention to the amount of sunlight your plant needs. If it requires minimum sunlight, place it indoors next to a window for a partially warm spot.

Tip 3: Make sure your pots have drainage holes. Proper drainage is vital for your plant's roots to receive air, rather than sitting in water and suffocating.

Here is another look at the importance of drainage holes. Having a way for pots to drain is vital for your plant and the soil, allowing roots to breathe.

Tip 4: Place low light plants in bathrooms. The humidity produced when showering will water your plants that do not require too much watering, and a small window provides enough light.

A bathroom is a warm, humid room that provides the perfect environment for many houseplants. This beautiful setup shows how you can create a green oasis in your bathroom.

About Plant Parent University: Care Tips & Guides

Most people kill their plants by accident because they think they need water every single day. The secret isn't a rigid schedule, it's the finger test. Stick your finger an inch into the soil; if it feels dry, then and only then should you water. It is the simplest, most effective way to prevent root rot and keep your indoor plants from drowning in kindness.

Understand Your Plant's Needs

Every plant has a story. Whether you are caring for a low-light loving Snake Plant or a sun-seeking Croton, the first step to successful gardening is understanding their natural environment.

  • The Light Balance: Many beginners struggle with 'bright indirect light.' This means placing your plant near a window where it gets plenty of ambient light, but not the harsh, direct sun that scorches leaves. If you have a Croton, remember that while it loves light, it hates burning in the direct afternoon Delhi sun.
  • The Drainage Rule: If your pot does not have a hole, your plant is effectively sitting in a bathtub. Drainage is non-negotiable for root health. If you fall in love with a decorative pot that lacks a hole, use it as a cachepot—keep the plant in its plastic nursery container inside the decorative one and lift it out to water it in the sink.
  • Humidity Hacks: Delhi weather fluctuates wildly. For plants that love humidity like Ferns or certain tropical foliage, grouping them together or using a pebble tray can create a microclimate that mimics their jungle home.

Dealing with Common Issues

  • Yellow Leaves: Usually a cry for help regarding water. If the soil is soggy, cut back immediately. If the soil is bone dry, increase your watering frequency.
  • Dusty Leaves: Just like us, plants need to breathe. Gently wipe leaves with a damp cloth every couple of weeks. It helps them photosynthesize better and keeps pests away.
