About From My Hands: The Crochet Process
People often ask how we plan our colour palettes. It starts with a mood, perhaps a rainy morning or the shift in autumn light, and then we select our mercerized cotton yarns to match that feeling. We do not follow rigid patterns for every piece, preferring to let the flow of the crochet hook decide the shape as we go. This intuitive process ensures that even our standard designs contain small, unique variations that make every item one of a kind.
From Yarn to Home
Our process begins long before the first stitch. We source high-quality mercerized cotton yarn, chosen specifically for its colorfastness and durability. Whether we are crafting a vibrant Rainbow Runner or a simple tea cozy, the material must feel as good as it looks.
We build our pieces using a variety of techniques:
- Structured Foundation: For our boho storage baskets, we combine a rugged jute base with soft cotton walls. This provides the stability needed for holding plants or toys while maintaining a rustic aesthetic.
- Wire Armature: For our everlasting crochet flowers, we work yarn over a flexible wire frame. This allows each tulip, sunflower, or lavender stem to be bent and posed, mimicking the movement of real botanicals without needing sunlight or water.
- Appliqué and Patchwork: Much of our charm comes from the detail work. Our granny squares and floral appliqués are stitched individually, then carefully joined to ensure the colours complement each other. It is a slow, methodical approach that prioritizes longevity and visual warmth.
