Choosing Durable Kitchen Materials and Finishes
Beyond just looks, the right material determines if your kitchen lasts a year or a decade. Here is what we use to handle the reality of daily cooking.
Choosing the right material is the first step. This guide explains the benefits of different cabinet materials I offer, including classic Solid Wood, moisture-resistant Plywood, and budget-friendly, customizable MDF.
A look at one of our most popular finishes. A laminate finish is highly durable and resistant to nicks and stains, making it a practical and stylish choice for high-use areas like kitchens.
About this collection
Your choice of base material depends entirely on your location and usage. In humid cities like Mumbai, I almost always recommend Boiling Water Proof (BWP) Marine Plywood for the kitchen carcass instead of standard boards. It resists swelling from moisture and holds hardware like hinges and drawer runners much tighter over time, preventing the sagging often seen in older cabinets.
Understanding Your Base Material
Not all plywood is the same. For kitchen carcasses, we use BWP Marine Plywood because it handles the moisture from daily washing and heavy cooking steam without de-lamination. If you are on a budget or looking for a piece of furniture that stays in a dry room, MDF is a great, cost-effective alternative for shutter panels, as it gives a perfectly smooth finish that paint or laminate loves. We never mix low-quality boards in a wet zone.
Finishes That Survive Masala and Oil
Indian kitchens are tough environments. Laminates remain the gold standard for high-use areas because they are scratch-resistant, easy to clean, and handle oil splatters well. If you want that premium, seamless look, Polyurethane (PU) paint is excellent, but it requires more careful maintenance. For those who want a mix of style and order, we often suggest ribbed glass for shutters. It hides the clutter of your masala jars and spices while looking clean and modern.
Countertops and Hardware
We prioritize functionality in our hardware. We use German-made soft-close hinges and drawer runners. They do not slam, and they do not rust. For countertops, we lean toward Quartz or Corian. These are non-porous, meaning they do not absorb turmeric stains or water, keeping your workspace hygienic.
Ultimately, your kitchen should fit your cooking style. Do you cook with heavy tadka? We suggest darker, matte finishes. Do you prefer a clutter-free, minimal aesthetic? We can hide everything behind handleless, push-to-open doors.
