Music, dance, and drama are more than just hobbies. They are ways to connect with a history that spans centuries. Dive into the origins of your favorite styles here.

Did you know dance is 9,000 years old? This graphic is the start of our journey into the history of dance, a timeless tradition of human expression that we are proud to teach in our classical, contemporary, and hip-hop dance classes.

The first archaeological proof of dance comes from 9,000-year-old cave paintings in India. We celebrate this ancient heritage in our dance programs, connecting our students to a rich, global history of movement.

Structured dance first appeared in religious ceremonies, telling stories of myths and gods. Our classical dance courses honor these narrative roots, teaching students to convey stories through expressive movement.

In Ancient Egypt, dance was used for both sacred rituals and entertainment. This shows the universal appeal of dance throughout history, a tradition we continue with our diverse range of dance classes for all ages.

It all started with a Bronx block party in 1973 that changed music forever. This graphic kicks off our series on the history of hip-hop, exploring the roots of this global cultural movement.

The hip-hop vibe was born when Jamaican sound system culture met the block parties of the Bronx. We explore these cross-cultural origins to give our students a deeper appreciation for the music they love.

The looping of the breakbeat was the innovation that gave birth to breakdancing. Understanding this history is key to mastering the rhythm and style of our hip-hop and B-boying dance classes.

This graphic illustrates the five pillars of hip-hop culture: DJing, MCing, Breaking, Graffiti, and Knowledge. We teach our students that hip-hop is more than just music; it's a whole movement.

Meet DJ Kool Herc, the father of hip-hop. We believe in respecting the roots and honoring the legends who started it all, providing our students with a rich context for the genres they study.

What makes jazz... jazz? This series explores the key elements of this soulful and improvisational genre. Our jazz curriculum dives deep into the theory and feel that define this unique American art form.

About Explore the World of Performing Arts

Understanding the 9,000-year history of dance or the roots of hip-hop in the Bronx isn't just trivia. It changes how you move, how you feel the beat, and how you approach your practice. When you know the context behind the rhythm, you aren't just playing notes; you are telling a story.

At Furtados School of Music, we teach you that every genre has a soul. Whether you are learning the swing of jazz or the foundational pillars of hip-hop culture, we ensure you grasp the cultural and technical history that makes these art forms tick.

Why Context Matters in Performance

We believe that technical skill is only half the battle. Our curriculum, which includes Trinity College London and Berklee standards, emphasizes that a true performer understands the legacy of their craft.

  • Dance Roots: From ancient cave paintings to modern hip-hop, we explore how movement has evolved. This gives our students the perspective to innovate in contemporary and classical dance.
  • The Jazz Feel: We don't just teach theory. We explore the New Orleans origins and the Indian fusion icons like Louis Banks, helping you internalize the 'swing' and improvisational nature of jazz.
  • Hip-Hop Culture: By learning about the breakbeat and the five pillars of the movement, our students gain a deep appreciation for the rhythm that fuels their dance steps.

Your Path to the Stage

This foundational knowledge translates directly to the stage. When you join our programs, you are not just signing up for a class. You are entering an ecosystem that includes:
