True photoprotection is more than just applying a layer of SPF. I help you build a complete defense system against UV rays, blue light, and environmental damage.

How do you protect yourself from blue light from screens and the sun? Standard sunscreens are not enough. You need sunscreens with opaque filters like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and iron oxide, which are found in tinted mineral sunscreens.

For Indian skin tones, protection from High Energy Visible Light (HEVL), or blue light, is more critical than a high SPF. HEVL penetrates deeper and causes more pigmentation. I advise looking for a sunscreen that specifically offers blue light protection.

Ever wondered if the blue glow from your screens affects your skin? Yes, it does. It stimulates melanin production leading to hyperpigmentation, disrupts your skin's repair cycle, and causes oxidative stress that degrades collagen, accelerating aging.

Blue light from our devices has four harmful effects on skin: it causes hyperpigmentation, triggers inflammation, generates damaging free radicals, and contributes to early signs of aging. Protecting your skin in our digital age is essential.

Which is more damaging, UVA or UVB? For Indian skin, it's UVA. These longer rays penetrate deeper, causing photoaging, wrinkles, and tanning. That's why you should always look for a high PA rating, not just SPF, when choosing a sunscreen.

For double protection, I recommend adding an oral sunscreen to your routine. These are antioxidants that protect the skin from damage caused by UV, infrared, and visible light. They are a great add-on to your topical sunscreen and physical protection.

As a dermatologist, I do not recommend sunscreen sprays. The particles can be inhaled, causing respiratory issues. Furthermore, up to 60% of the product can be lost to the atmosphere, and application is often uneven, compromising your protection.

What kind of sunscreen do dermatologists prefer? The choices vary, but many of us opt for mineral sunscreens, tinted formulas for blue light protection, and products that combine sun protection with moisturizers for daily use.

Do you think sunscreen is all you need for skin protection? True photoprotection is an arsenal. It includes broad-brimmed hats, protective eyewear, and UPF clothing in addition to a good sunscreen to create a multi-layered barrier against UV radiation.

Your clothing can be your best protection against the sun. I advise choosing darker colors, densely woven fabrics like denim, loose-fitting styles, and items with a UPF rating of 30 or more to maximize your sun protection.

About Sun Protection & Environmental Defense

Most sunscreens focus on UVB rays, but for Indian skin, the real enemy is often HEVL (High Energy Visible Light) from your screens and the sun. This is the blue light that drives stubborn melasma and pigmentation. If you are not using a tinted mineral sunscreen with iron oxide, you are leaving your skin vulnerable even while sitting indoors.
