Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable: The Truth About Daily Protection

If you are skipping sunscreen, you are skipping the single most effective anti-aging tool you own. Stop chasing trends and start protecting your skin properly.

Reapplying sunscreen over makeup or on sweaty skin is a common problem, but it's crucial for protection. I've found two great solutions: a mineral sunscreen powder and a sunscreen stick. Both offer SPF 50, are non-sticky, easy to apply on the go, and give a matte finish without disturbing your makeup.

My husband’s experience with stinging eyes from sunscreen is very common. I explain that ingredients like avobenzone, oxybenzone, alcohol, or fragrance are often the culprits. Choosing a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is a much safer bet, especially for sensitive skin around the eyes.

A common question I get is whether chemical sunscreens should be avoided. The answer is no, not for everyone. I explain that only people with very oily, sweaty, or sensitive skin might experience irritation. For them, a physical sunscreen is a better choice as it sits on the skin without causing a reaction.

Confused about which SPF to choose? Here’s my simple guide. If you are mostly indoors, SPF 30 is sufficient. If you spend more than 30 minutes outdoors, you need SPF 50. For those with pigmentation issues like melasma, I always recommend a tinted SPF 50 for added blue light protection.

Are you being fooled by your sunscreen's label? I break down how to read the ingredient list to ensure you are getting true broad-spectrum protection. I list the key UVA and UVB filters to look for, explain what PA+ ratings mean for infrared protection, and show you how to check for certified testing.

Reapplying sunscreen is confusing for many, especially over makeup or on oily skin. This guide provides clear instructions: for dry skin, reapply directly; for oily skin, blot first. If you're wearing makeup, a sunscreen spray, stick, or powder is your best option for a quick touch-up without ruining your look.

Here are my essential tips for summer skincare. This includes washing your face twice daily, patting sweat instead of rubbing to avoid pigmentation, and most importantly, using a non-sticky, oil-free sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapplied three times a day to prevent premature aging.

Enjoying the sun is great, but protecting your skin is essential. This image from my trip to the Amalfi Coast is a reminder to always carry a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 50+. Consistent use is the key to preventing sunburn, pigmentation, and premature aging.

I reviewed Kriti Sanon's mineral sunscreen and found some major issues. While it has good mineral filters, it also contains glycolic acid, which increases sun sensitivity, and talc, which can clog pores. This combination is a recipe for disaster, especially for acne-prone or sensitive skin.

I was disappointed by Deepika Padukone's oil-based sunscreen. An oil-based formula is impractical for India's climate as it attracts dust, clogs pores, and can cause acne breakouts, especially on sweaty skin. I explain why this product is not worth the hype or the high price point.

About Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable

Reapplying sunscreen over makeup is a common pain point for my patients. You do not need to wash your face to reapply. Keep a mineral sunscreen powder or a stick in your bag. These options are non-sticky, work perfectly over makeup, and keep you protected throughout the day without ruining your look.

Sunscreen is not just for the beach or summer holidays. It is your primary defense against premature aging, pigmentation, and stubborn dark spots. If you only take one piece of advice from me, let it be this: wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every single day, even if you are staying indoors.

The Science of Protection

Many of you are confused by labels. Look for 'broad-spectrum' to ensure you are covered against both UVA rays (which cause aging) and UVB rays (which cause burning). If you spend more than 30 minutes outdoors, SPF 50 is the gold standard. For those of you dealing with melasma or excessive screen time, I recommend a tinted SPF 50. It provides an extra layer of protection against blue light, which contributes to skin damage just like the sun does.

Chemical vs. Physical Filters

Don't let the 'all-natural' marketing fool you. Chemical sunscreens are effective, but they can sting if you have sensitive or sweaty skin. Physical sunscreens (using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sit on top of the skin and are often the safer bet for oily or acne-prone types. It is not about one being better than the other; it is about which one your skin tolerates.

Why You Must Reapply

Sunscreen is not a 'wear it once' product. It degrades. If you are out in the sun, you need to reapply. If you are at an office, reapply once. The best sunscreen is the one you actually use, so find a texture you like, keep it visible, and make it a habit. Your future self will thank you for the consistency.
