Composting Food Waste to Garden Gold
I turn kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost using the help of my hard-working hens. It is messy, real work that creates the best soil amendment for your garden.
This is where it all begins. We transform piles of community food scraps, full of color and life, into valuable compost. Understanding the balance of green and brown materials is the first step, and it's a fundamental part of my beginner workshops.
A large pile of nearly finished compost, dark and rich in organic matter. This is the result of months of decomposition, turning, and management.

About From Scraps to Garden Gold
You don't need fancy equipment to create nutrient-dense compost; you need consistency and the right balance of materials. I use a mix of 'browns' like dried leaves or cardboard and 'greens' like food scraps to fuel the process. My chickens do the heavy lifting, naturally turning the pile and speeding up decomposition, which results in the dark, rich 'garden gold' that makes plants thrive.
The Anatomy of My Compost
Turning waste into gold is a cycle of balance. If you just throw scraps in a heap, you get a mess. If you manage the ratios, you get high-quality soil amendment.
- The Greens: These are your nitrogen-rich kitchen scraps—vegetable peels, fruit waste, and coffee grounds. They provide the fuel.
- The Browns: This is the structure. Carbon-rich materials like cardboard, sawdust, or dried leaves keep the pile from smelling and prevent it from compacting.
- The Chickens: They are my secret weapon. They scratch, aerate, and add their own natural fertilizer to the mix, effectively turning the pile for me.
Why Things Go Wrong
I am always upfront about the failures because they are part of the process. I have dealt with broken gear, drainage issues, and the endless struggle of finding enough space. If you are starting your own setup, be prepared for trial and error. Whether it is an apartment balcony or a backyard, you will have to experiment with your airflow and moisture levels.
Let's Get Your Hands Dirty
I offer detailed workshops and consultations because I want you to avoid the mistakes I made early on. From designing a durable DIY sifter that won't break under pressure to setting up a functional worm bin in your kitchen, I teach the mechanics that actually work. Reach out if you want to troubleshoot your current infrastructure or if you need a step-by-step guide on starting your first pile.
