Afro Braiding & Protective Styling
Protective styles should look great, but they must keep your natural hair safe. I focus on Afro braiding techniques that prioritize scalp health and tension prevention, so your hair can grow and thrive while you rock a new look.
My philosophy is that protective styles must protect your hair first. This video shows my complete approach to Afro braid care, covering the essential steps I teach all my clients: gentle cleansing, scalp moisturizing, daily protection, and safe styling. Healthy hair underneath is always the goal.
About Afro Braiding & Aftercare
I don't believe in the idea that beauty has to be painful. When I install braids, my primary focus is tension control. I use geometric sectioning to distribute weight evenly, ensuring there is zero pulling on your hairline. If a style feels tight or uncomfortable while I am working, it is already putting stress on your roots, and I will adjust it immediately to protect your hair's integrity.
My Approach to Protective Styling
Many people view braids as just a style, but at Curl Talk, I see them as a recovery period for your hair. My goal is to give your curls a break from daily manipulation while allowing them to grow underneath.
The Process
Every session begins with a deep, sulfate-free cleanse and a tension-method blow dry to prep your natural curls. This creates a smooth, neat base for braiding without relying on damaging heat styling. During installation, I focus on 'pain-free' tension control to prevent traction alopecia, ensuring the braids are secure but never pulling.
Why Aftercare Matters
Braids are a commitment, but they shouldn't be high-stress. I guide you through a routine you can actually manage at home:
- Scalp Hygiene: You should be washing your scalp every 1-2 weeks. Use a nozzle-based applicator to get shampoo directly to the roots without disturbing the braid structure.
- Moisture Balance: Spritz your braids with water and a light leave-in conditioner. Focus on hydrating the scalp with light oils rather than heavy products that build up.
- The 6-8 Week Rule: Braids are fabulous, but they have an expiration date. Keeping them in longer than 8 weeks leads to matting and breakage. I encourage you to book a 'Braid Refresh' if you need an aesthetic cleanup, or plan for total removal by the 8-week mark to give your natural hair space to breathe.
What to Expect
Whether you are looking for box braids, a color switch, or a protective updo, my priority is the health of your scalp and edges. We use high-quality synthetic hair and seal ends with hot water dipping to prevent unraveling. When you leave the studio, you will know exactly how to wrap your hair at night with silk and how to refresh your style so it looks fresh for weeks.
