Buying candles should be simple, but there is a lot of noise out there. Let me help you cut through it and pick a candle that is actually worth burning.

6 essential things you should know before buying soy candles. This guide goes beyond just burning to help you understand cost, quality, and what makes a truly good candle.

About this collection

Most people do not realize that the wick and the wax temperature are just as important as the scent. If you want a candle that burns evenly without that frustrating tunneling effect, watch your first burn closely. A well-poured soy candle should always melt right to the edges within the first hour of lighting, proving that the chemistry behind it is balanced properly.

People often ask me, 'Ketki, why does your candle smell different?' It is all in the process. When I started Candles with a K five years ago, I did not just want to make decor, I wanted to make science-backed home experiences.

The Soy Advantage

Paraffin is convenient for mass manufacturers because it is cheap and holds synthetic fragrance well, but it is a petroleum byproduct. My 100% soy wax candles burn cleaner and last longer because they do not produce that black soot you see with cheaper options. If you are sensitive to strong smells or just care about your indoor air quality, choosing soy is a non-negotiable step.

Testing Matters

Every new scent I introduce in my Bengaluru workshop goes through weeks of testing. It is not just about mixing oil and wax. I test for 'fragrance load'—the maximum amount of oil the wax can hold before it stops burning properly—and 'wick performance.' A candle that drowns its own wick is a sign of poor testing.

Your First Burn

Here is the golden rule: The first time you light your candle, let it burn until the liquid wax touches the edges of the jar. This is called 'creating a memory ring.' If you blow it out too early, the candle will only melt down the middle for the rest of its life, wasting the wax on the sides.

What to Ask Your Maker

Whether you are buying from me or someone else, always ask:

  • Is this 100% soy or a blend with paraffin?
  • What kind of wicks are you using (cotton or wood)?
  • Are you using essential oils or synthetic fragrances?

If they cannot answer these, keep looking. Your space—and your nose—deserve better.

I am Ketki, and I swapped the newsroom for my candle workshop five years ago. I do not just pour wax; I create memories in a jar, one hand-poured batch at a time. If you want to know what actually goes into your candle, you are in the right place.
