DUA Villa: A Dialogue Between Light and Nature
A labyrinth of leisure in Alibaug, where architecture bows to the rhythm of nature. We designed this home as a quiet sanctuary, blending tactile lime plaster and rhythmic arches with the surrounding landscape.
The DUA Villa is nestled within its verdant landscape, with outdoor seating areas that feel like natural extensions of the interior. The architecture is designed to frame nature, creating quiet moments for contemplation amidst the foliage.
Movement through the DUA Villa is a cinematic experience. The corridors and arched openings are designed to create a sense of discovery, leading you through spaces that are constantly changing with the light and revealing new connections to the gardens outside.
Light is a tangible element in our design for the DUA Villa. Here, a beam of sunlight cuts across the double-height living space, highlighting the texture of the lime-washed walls and the gentle curve of the architecture.
The building's monolithic character is punctuated by a rhythm of arched openings, reflected in the still water of the pool. This black and white photograph emphasizes the project's essential gestures: form, reflection, and the stark beauty of its geometry.
Arched doorways framed in brass open onto the lush patio, seamlessly connecting the bedroom to the outdoors. The design allows for natural light to filter in, while the patterned floor and curated armchair create a comfortable, elegant interior.
From this bedroom, a grand archway frames a view of the dense greenery, making nature the primary artwork. The sculptural pendant light and minimalist furniture maintain the focus on the serene connection between the interior space and the garden.
The dining area at DUA Villa is a long, transitional space that connects different parts of the home. The use of natural materials like the solid wood table, patterned stone flooring, and hand-blown glass lights reinforces the home's earthy, grounded aesthetic.
A traditional Indian swing, or 'jhoola', offers a place for gentle repose, looking out through an arched window. This space embodies slow living, combining cultural elements with a modern design sensibility to create a peaceful corner within the home.
This four-poster bed, with its delicate canopy, creates an intimate sanctuary within the larger bedroom. The design looks out through an arched doorway, maintaining a constant visual conversation with the villa's courtyards and gardens.
A view through an archway reveals the living space, where light from a high clerestory window illuminates the textured walls. This layering of spaces and light sources is a key strategy we use to create depth and complexity.
About A Dialogue with Nature: DUA Villa, Alibaug
The villa’s thermal comfort relies on deep verandahs and thick, lime-plastered walls that regulate temperature naturally. If you are planning a similar project, consider that these raw materials gain a beautiful, lived-in patina over time, requiring very little maintenance compared to standard painted finishes.
The DUA Villa is a study in how residential architecture can exist in harmony with the environment. We move away from the trend of imposing large, glass-heavy structures, instead opting for a series of interconnected spaces that prioritize cross-ventilation and diffused light.
Materiality and Process
The choice of sand-face and lime plaster is intentional. These finishes allow the building to breathe, maintaining a cooler indoor climate even during the humid summer months in Alibaug. We believe in the physical model-making process. By testing these volumetric studies in our Mumbai studio, we ensured that the transition between interior corridors and exterior courtyards felt seamless.
Design Philosophy
We focused on the rhythm of the plan, using a modular grid to dictate the placement of arches and skylights. This created a sequence of discovery. As you walk through the home, the light changes and your connection to the garden shifts, making the building feel dynamic rather than static. The goal was to build a home where the boundary between indoors and outdoors is blurred, encouraging a slower, more deliberate way of living.
