About Our Puppet Museum & Exhibits
A visit to our museum is not a passive walk-through. It is a 90-minute educational session for groups of 25 or more, where we explain the anatomy and history of each puppet. You will see firsthand how the string and rod mechanisms function, and our artists are always present to answer your questions about the intricate craft behind these characters.
At the Mandala Cultural Centre, we have created an environment where art and nature coexist. Our museum houses a collection that spans various forms of Indian puppetry, from the delicate string puppets inspired by Hoysala temple motifs to intricate shadow and hand puppets.
When you visit, you are not just looking at objects behind glass. You are observing a lineage of storytelling. The museum walk-through is designed to be interactive, allowing schools, families, and organizations to understand the technical mastery required to perform these epics. We believe that by engaging with the physical mechanics of a puppet, one gains a deeper respect for the art form.
What to expect during your visit
- Guided Educational Tour: A staff-led exploration of the museum, covering the history and regional variations of puppets.
- Live Demonstration: A 15 to 20 minute interactive session where we show how the puppets are brought to life through movement.
- Interactive Q&A: A dedicated time for visitors to speak with our puppeteers about their craft.
The museum is set within an open-air, sunlit space on Kanakapura Road, away from the noise of the city. We maintain a focus on a traditional 'Bharatiya' atmosphere—no loud speakers, only the resonance of stories. For those bringing larger groups, we provide seating on floor mats or basic chairs to keep the focus entirely on the performance and the exhibit.
