We transform narrow urban plots into landmarks by balancing form, texture, and light within the strict constraints of metro building codes.

About Urban Residential Facades

On a tight 15-foot wide plot, we cannot rely on large projections, so I focus on using lines, grooves, and color to break down the facade's mass. By treating plumbing shafts as vertical design bands and using texture-painted surfaces, I create visual depth even when the building footprint is restricted by strict city zoning rules.

My approach to urban facades is rooted in a response to context. Whether I am working on a neo-classical design with intricate mouldings, such as the Kaira residence, or a modern apartment on a narrow South Delhi plot, the goal remains the same: creating a strong visual identity that respects the scale of its neighbors.

The Technical Side of Design

Every facade project begins with a site analysis of sun path, wind direction, and plot constraints. In dense urban areas, the challenge is often a lack of space for projection. I solve this by:

  • Manipulating Massing: Using lines and grooves to create texture and shadow, which breaks the monotony of a flat wall.
  • Strategic Coloring: Applying varied textures and color palettes to define vertical and horizontal zones, effectively breaking down the building's scale.
  • Functional Integration: Transforming necessary elements like plumbing shafts or balconies into deliberate design features rather than hiding them.

Material Selection

I work with materials that provide tactile quality, from smooth paint finishes to raw stone and metal railing profiles. For modern projects, I utilize dark grey aluminum frames to provide definition to openings. For heritage-inspired designs, I focus on authentic mouldings and cornices that evoke traditional charm while maintaining a modern structural integrity.

By staying involved throughout the construction phase, I ensure that the design vision, from the conceptual sketch to the final execution, remains consistent. I handle the structural coordination, including column placement and MEP engineering, to ensure that the exterior form does not compromise the internal floor plan.

I approach urban facades as a puzzle. Whether it is a 15-foot wide plot or a neo-classical home, I look for ways to break up the massing with lines, grooves, and light so the building feels like it belongs in the neighborhood.
