About The UCMAS Advantage: Whole Brain Development
Most parents arrive thinking this is just about faster math, but the core of our work is the six-finger abacus technique. By physically engaging the fingers to manipulate beads, children eventually learn to visualize the abacus in their minds, allowing them to solve complex calculations without any tools. This visualization skill is the catalyst for the broader cognitive benefits—like sharper memory and improved multitasking—that our students naturally carry into their other school subjects.
How Whole Brain Development Works
At UCMAS, we view the abacus as more than a calculator; it is a brain gym. By using both hands to manipulate beads, children stimulate both hemispheres of the brain. The left brain handles the logical, sequential arithmetic, while the right brain powers the visualization and creativity required to picture the abacus during mental calculations.

The Classroom Experience
Our classes are designed for ages 5-13, focusing on a balance of discipline and play. Whether you choose online or offline sessions, our curriculum is structured to prevent math anxiety. Each level takes about 12 to 16 weeks to complete, with a 2-hour weekly session that includes:
- Brain Gym: Warm-up exercises to get the mind ready for learning.
- Speed Drills: Using flashcards and oral dictation to push boundaries.
- Auditory Skills: Training the brain to listen and calculate simultaneously.
