Devotional Idol Draping and Vastralankar
Draping is my way of performing puja. Whether it is a home Ganpati or a community Devi idol, I bring tradition and precision to every fold to make your deity look divine.
For the Navratri festival, I draped the Japachi Devi idol in a beautiful grey saree. This Vastralankar service is a form of worship for me, and I take great care in selecting the fabric and style.
Here I am draping the Japachi Devi idol in a royal blue saree for the third day of Navratri. The process involves careful pleating and placement to honor the goddess.
This video shows me draping the Swami Aai idol in a Keshari, or saffron-colored, saree. This is a special puja draping where every fold is made with respect and devotion.
For the sixth day of Navratri, I created this special puja look for the Swami Aai idol. The multi-colored silk saree is draped in a traditional style to create a divine appearance.

Another Navratri special puja for the Swami Aai idol. The combination of an orange and grey silk saree creates a unique and reverent look for the deity.
This video shows me draping a Ganpati idol just before the procession begins. This is a crucial part of the preparations, ensuring Bappa looks magnificent for the devotees.
About this collection
When I drape a Ganpati or Devi idol, I rely on traditional starch-stiffening methods to get those sharp, fan-shaped pleats you often see at major pandals. My process involves using fabric fillers to correct the idol's silhouette and applying specific, rust-free pins that protect the paintwork. I do not just dress the idol, I ensure the drape stays rigid and perfect throughout the procession or festival days without sagging.
My Approach to Idol Draping
For me, draping is not just about fabric. It is a form of devotion. I treat every idol as if it were my own, applying years of experience in murtikar work and styling to ensure the garment respects the divinity of the deity.
The Techniques I Use
- Starch Stiffening: This is essential for the Lalbaug style fan drapes. I use natural starch to give the fabric the structure it needs to hold its shape for days.
- Silhouette Correction: Many idols need a little support to look their best. I use fabric fillers to fill out the form, ensuring the saree or sovale falls naturally.
- Safe Execution: The most important rule in my studio is protecting the idol. I use idol-safe adhesives and specific pinning techniques to ensure that no paint is chipped or damaged during the draping process.
Styles and Customization I handle a variety of traditional styles including Sovale (Silk Dhoti), Rajwadi, and Peshwai for Ganpati idols, and elegant saree draping for Devi idols during Navratri. I work with whatever fabric, jewelry, and accessories you have, advising on how to arrange them for the best visual impact.
