Sketchbook & Journaling Ideas for Aesthetic Spreads
Welcome to my cozy, messy art corner! I am sharing my favorite sketchbook spreads and journaling ideas, from dark academia vibes to soft, coquette-inspired art. Hope these spark a little magic for your own pages.
A sketchbook idea for you to try. On one page, I painted an anatomical heart, and on the other, I filled it with lipstick prints. It’s a cool mix of science and romance.
Here I’m painting on a 50-gram paper in an old book. The paper was too thin for my original idea, but I still love the look of these painted hands against the vintage text.
Painting on a 30-year-old book from my dad. This time I painted a pair of black converse shoes, and the aged, yellowed paper makes for a perfect dark academia canvas.
I had mixed feelings about this sketchbook spread, but it’s all part of the creative process. It features vintage-style letter writing, flowers, and lipstick kisses.
I wanted to paint lip stains without actually staining the book, and I love how it turned out. This sketchbook page has a very vintage, romantic feel, inspired by Taylor Swift.
Another easy idea for your sketchbook. This page is filled with lipstick prints and a single red rose, with "Je t'aime" written in the corner.
A finished journal spread with a golden hour, shadow art theme. I painted a rose and its shadow, along with a polaroid-style painting and some text bubbles.
This sketchbook idea looked better in my head, but I still think it's cute. It features a vintage-style page with heart-shaped earphones and coquette-inspired bows.
Another easy idea for when you're in an art block. This sketchbook page combines a vintage paper look with painted lipstick kisses and realistic earphones.
About Sketchbook & Journaling Ideas
I love giving old, yellowed books a second life by painting directly on the pages. It adds this moody, vintage texture, like painting Converse shoes on a 30-year-old dictionary page or using tea-stained paper for that authentic dark academia feel. The paper can be tricky because it is thin, but that imperfection is exactly what makes it so charming.
My sketchbook is really my safe space. It is just me, my paints, and usually a random 2 am thought. When I am stuck in an art block, I turn to these themes to get the creativity flowing. I love mixing mediums; watercolor and gouache are my go-to for those soft, creamy textures.
Vintage & Dark Academia
I am obsessed with the 'lived-in' look. Painting on pages from old books (don't worry, they are usually already falling apart!) gives artwork an instant story. The contrast between new, bright paint and aged, brittle paper is everything.
Coquette & Romantic Details
Think bows, lipstick kisses, and handwritten love notes. I use lip stains or red gouache to stamp little kisses on the page, paired with florals or song lyrics. It is simple, messy, and feels super personal.
Technique Tips
If you are trying this, do not stress about 'ruining' a page. If a spread does not look right, cover it with a collage or some washi tape. I use high-quality 300 GSM paper for my main commissioned work, but for these sketchbook experiments, I play with whatever is lying around.
Why I Share This
You do not need a fancy studio to create art. Most of these ideas started at my desk with basic brushes and a cup of tea. If you are looking for a sign to start that art journal or finally use that sketchbook, this is it!
