Weather changes should not pause your bond. Whether you are dealing with a heatwave or a week of rain, these simple, practical tips will keep your dog cool, stimulated, and happy indoors.

Summer is here! The heat can be tough on our dogs, so here are 7 essential things you can do to keep them cool, safe, and happy all season long.

On a hot day, a kiddie pool can be a lifesaver! This pup is having a blast cooling off and playing in the water. It's a fun and effective way to beat the heat.

To avoid the hottest part of the day, walk your dog in the early morning or late evening when the pavement is cool on their paws.

Offer your dog cooling foods like curd, coconut water, or pieces of dog-safe fruits. These can help them stay hydrated and cool from the inside out.

A simple way to help your dog cool down is to give them ice cubes to chew on or add some to their water bowl.

For a refreshing and mentally stimulating treat, try freezing your dog's food or some yogurt inside a Kong toy. It will keep them busy and cool them down.

Don't let a rainy day be a boring day! There are so many fun things you can do indoors to keep your dog mentally and physically active. Here are 4 of my favorite ideas.

A rainy day is the perfect opportunity to teach your dog a new command or a fun trick. It's a great way to bond and work their brain.

Use a rainy day to brush up on all the commands your dog already knows. A quick practice session helps keep their skills sharp.

Get creative and make some DIY toys for your dog to engage with. A rainy day is perfect for a fun crafting and play session.

About Seasonal Care & Indoor Activities

Many people think they need expensive gear to keep their dog stimulated, but the truth is your dog cares more about your interaction than the toy itself. Whether it is turning a simple ice cube into a game or setting up a living room obstacle course, these indoor moments are the best time to build that connection. It is not just about passing time, it is about YOU being the one who makes the indoors fun.

Beating the Heat Safely

When the temperature rises, our job is to be proactive. It is not just about avoiding walks during peak heat, though that is essential to protect those paws. It is about actively cooling your dog down from the inside out. I often suggest freezing a Kong toy with yogurt or their regular food, or simply tossing ice cubes for them to chase. These little changes turn a boring afternoon into a rewarding mental game that keeps them calm.

Making the Most of Rainy Days

When you are stuck inside for days, it is easy to get frustrated, but I treat these days as an opportunity. A rainy day is the perfect time to work on 'grooming socialization.' Use the time to get your dog comfortable with being brushed, handled, or even bathed, so these tasks do not become a battle later on. If you have extra energy to burn, set up a mini obstacle course using pillows or boxes. It teaches your dog to follow your lead indoors, which translates to better focus when you are finally back outside.

Your Role as a Leader

Remember, your dog looks to YOU for cues on how to handle change. If you stay calm and creative during a heatwave or a storm, they will too. My approach is always to focus on the relationship. By being consistent and making these indoor activities a shared project, you are building a foundation of trust that makes training much easier when the weather clears up.

I'm Pebbles, and I started Prance because I believe the best training happens when you stop focusing on 'tricks' and start focusing on the relationship. My own dog Rascal is my best teacher—he’s shown me that when you make training fun, your dog will choose to work with you every single time. I'm here to help you get there, right from your living room.
