Perspectives on Law, Life, and Justice
Law is not just about case files and courtrooms; it is about the stories, the people, and the societal shifts that drive justice. Here is a look at the experiences and philosophies that shape my practice and keep me grounded.
Remembering the immortal wisdom of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This page from a book on her life highlights her fight against pregnancy discrimination. Her arguments led to the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, a landmark piece of legislation that changed the workplace for women.
More wisdom from RBG. She noted that the Court's views change because society changes. A great legal scholar once said the Court should not be affected by the weather of the day, but inevitably, it will be. This reflects the dynamic nature of law and justice.
I believe in wearing your heritage with pride. Whether it's wearing a saree for a formal function in the USA or for daily work, it's about honoring your culture. It's a comfortable, powerful attire, and normalizing Indian wear is something I am passionate about.
A glimpse of my recent book haul, including the Supreme Court Yearly Digest. For lawyers, reading judgments is not just a habit, it's a necessity. Building a personal library and creating a repository of important case law is fundamental to our practice.
This is one of my favorite law bookshops, located in the subway opposite the Supreme Court. It's a treasure trove of bare acts, commentaries, and books on jurisprudence from around the world.
Browsing the shelves at Mohan Law House. I can spend hours here, discovering new books and finding commentaries that offer fresh perspectives on complex legal issues.
Stacks of law books, ready to be shipped out. This sight is a testament to the ever-growing body of legal knowledge that we as lawyers must constantly engage with.
More stacks of books outside the law bookstore. Each bundle represents countless hours of research, argument, and judicial reasoning, the very foundation of our legal system.
The saree is an effortless and conscious part of my wardrobe, not just for special occasions. From my office in Delhi to an art show or even traveling abroad, it is my go-to outfit. Wearing handloom keeps indigenous crafts alive and promotes sustainability.
A throwback to a visit to a night shelter with my daughter, Ana. It's important for her to see the world with empathy. Here, we are interacting with children, a reminder that social work and legal advocacy are two sides of the same coin of justice.
About Additional Work & Musings
Reading judgments is as crucial to my practice as drinking chai. My library in Delhi is not just for show; it is a repository of jurisprudence that allows me to build precedent-backed arguments. Whether I am analyzing an RBG interview or browsing bare acts at Mohan Law House, these inputs directly fuel the clear, no-nonsense legal strategies I apply to your cases.
Being a first-gen lawyer was never about following a pre-written script. It started with my own daughter’s citizenship struggle, which taught me that the law is often a haze that only clarity can cut through.
Why This Matters for Your Case
- Evidence-Based Advocacy: I do not believe in Latin drama or confusing jargon. My approach is to present the facts as they are. My deep dive into historical judgments and diverse jurisprudence means I look for precedents that others might overlook.
- Empathy and Realism: My volunteer work at night shelters and social advocacy is not a hobby. It is what grounds my legal perspective. Understanding the realities of life, from the struggle of the marginalized to the needs of the NRI community, allows me to provide advice that is actually actionable.
- Continuous Learning: You will often find me updating my repository of judgments or discussing legal nuances with colleagues. In a field that is constantly changing, being a lifelong student is the only way to ensure your defense is solid.
Legal literacy is your best shield. Whether I am mentoring new lawyers, writing about the importance of wearing your heritage, or breaking down complex laws, my goal is to make the law accessible. Justice should not be a mystery; it should be a clear, achievable outcome.
