Behind the Lens: Wildlife Photography Trails

Photography is mostly about patience and knowing where to look. Here is a glimpse into my process, the gear I use, and the rugged trails where I capture my best work.

This is my therapy. The journey is as important as the destination. This is a glimpse into my process, heading out on the trails with my gear, ready for whatever nature has in store.

My monsoon diaries. Trekking through the lush green forests of the Western Ghats during the rains is a completely different and refreshing experience.

A surprise sighting. This video shows my camera setup in the field and the resulting sharp image of a Red-breasted Flycatcher on the screen.

Go where you feel most alive. For me, that's on a quiet trail in the middle of the forest.

This video shows the process of capturing the Verditer Flycatcher at Sinhagad, Pune, from the setup to the final shot on my Nikon camera.

A short video of a trek near Panvel, starting in the dark and ending with a beautiful sunrise view from the top.

About On the Trail: Behind the Lens

You do not need a flagship camera to get started, but you do need to know where to look. On my field sessions, I teach you how to scan the canopy and track movement before you ever reach for your shutter button. We spend our time in spots like the wetlands of Navi Mumbai or the dense trails of the Western Ghats, focusing on the basics: how to handle a heavy telephoto lens for hours without fatigue and when to hold your breath for that perfect, steady shot.

The Reality of the Field

Nature photography is rarely about standing in one spot with a tripod. It is about the trek in the dark, the mud during the Monsoon Diaries, and the early mornings waiting for the sun to hit the creek. My process is simple: I go where the wildlife feels most alive. Whether I am using my Nikon D7500 for a quick flight shot or the Nikon Z9 for detailed habitat documentation, the goal remains the same—minimal disturbance, maximum detail.

What We Cover on the Trail

When we head out, we are not just sightseeing. We are hunting for specific behaviours. I help you understand:

  • Spotting: How to identify the subtle flick of a tail or the distinct call of a species in a busy forest.
  • Technique: How to balance your shutter speed when a kingfisher dives, or how to use negative space to frame a bird against the sky.
  • Ethics: How to approach wildlife without scaring them away. A successful shot is one where the animal continues its natural behaviour.

Where I Shoot

I primarily operate across the Mumbai Metropolitan Area. From the TS Chanakya wetlands—my backyard and home to thousands of flamingos—to the hidden trails of Karnala and the deeper forest reaches in the Western Ghats, I choose locations based on the season. If you are looking to master your gear or just want a guide who knows which tree the owl prefers, join me on a trail. We will spend the day learning how to turn a surprise sighting into a story.

Hi, I am Aashish. For me, the camera is therapy, and the best shots are the ones where I have waited hours, completely still, for a bird to trust me. Join me on a trail, and I will show you how to read the forest before you even lift your lens.
