Pet Care Tips from Our Experts
Practical, honest advice from me and our in-house vet, Dr. Anubhav, to help you navigate everything from daily grooming to recognising early health warning signs.
A common question I get is whether it's okay to leave pets alone for long hours. Here, I explain how to train your pet to be self-sufficient, starting with short intervals and gradually increasing the time, to help manage separation anxiety.
Regular brushing is more than just for looks. It helps you spot fleas and ticks, removes dead hair, distributes natural oils for a healthy coat, and allows you to check for any lumps or injuries.
Winter in Bangalore can be tough on some pets, especially puppies and seniors. Our vet discusses common winter issues like respiratory infections and joint pain, and offers solutions like providing lukewarm water and keeping them warm.
Our vet answers two common questions: what to feed a cat if you are vegetarian, and how often to bathe a puppy. He explains that cats are obligate carnivores needing taurine from meat, and puppies should only be bathed after 3 months.
Here are 5 common grooming mistakes to avoid to keep your pet happy and healthy.
Avoiding these common mistakes in pet care is key to a happy and healthy furbaby.
Over-bathing is a frequent mistake. It can strip your pet's coat of natural oils, leading to dry skin. I recommend bathing only every 4 to 6 weeks for most breeds.
About this collection
Many people think brushing is just about making their pet look pretty, but I see it differently—it is your first line of defense. Regular, thorough brushing lets you catch ticks early, spot mysterious lumps, and monitor changes in their skin before they become painful issues. It is the easiest, most effective health check you can do at home in just five minutes.
Expert Advice for Your Furbaby
At Oh My Dawg, we believe that being a great pet parent is about constant learning. Whether you are in HSR Layout or elsewhere in Bengaluru, the challenges remain the same. Our team, including Dr. Anubhav, has compiled guidance based on the most common questions we get in the shop.
Grooming: More Than Just a Cut
One of the biggest mistakes I see? Over-bathing. We often want our pets to smell like us, but bathing more than once every 4-6 weeks strips their natural oils. If your pet has dry, flaky skin, they might just need a better brushing routine instead of another shampoo session. Always skip human products—our pH levels are just not compatible with theirs.
Seasonal & Health Awareness
- Winter Care: When the temperature drops, senior pets and puppies need extra support. Joint pain can flare up in older dogs, and young puppies are more susceptible to infections. Keep them warm and monitor their activity levels closely.
- Dietary Needs: We get many questions about vegetarian diets for cats. Please remember, cats are obligate carnivores. They require taurine, which is found in meat, to stay healthy. If you are struggling with their diet, come chat with us.
- Early Detection: The most important thing you can do is observe. Changes in appetite, unusual thirst, or sudden weight loss are signals. Don't wait for these symptoms to worsen; early intervention with a vet is always the kindest choice.
Adopt, Don't Shop
Finally, remember that our 'beedhi naayi' (street dogs) are just as resilient and loving as any pedigree. If you are looking to bring a pet into your life, consider fostering or adopting. It is not just about saving them; it is about finding a companion who will change your life as much as you change theirs.
