Behind the Scenes: My Dance Studio Practice & Personal Jams
When I am not teaching or performing, you will find me here—just moving. These are my raw, unfiltered studio moments where I experiment, practice, and reconnect with the music.
Since I've been missing the stage, I put together a mini-show for myself in the studio. Just me, the mirror, and some Mambo and Pachanga music. This is how I stay inspired.
Confession time: I was in a dance slump. The only way out is to just move. This was me booking a studio and improvising to some Mambo. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about breaking the rut.
Ten minutes of alone time at the studio is a luxury these days! This is what a quick jam session looks like: pick a song, start to move, and find a flow. It's my favorite way to reconnect with myself.
An exercise in musicality. Here, I'm dancing to the different elemental rhythms of Salsa music, like the clave, conga, and melody. It's a great way to deepen your understanding of the music.
Spontaneous living room dancing can lead to some cute results! Sometimes you just have to move when the music hits, even if you haven't combed your hair.
Trying to practice my moves outdoors, but got distracted by the cute baby in the background! A real-life look at being a dancing mom.
I was on my way to the gym, but this song tripped me up and I ended up having a dance session instead. Sometimes, procrastination is rewarding!
About this collection
People often think the studio is only for intense choreography rehearsals, but for me, it is a sanctuary. Whether I am deconstructing a Mambo rhythm or just working out a mood, these sessions keep me honest. If you are learning with me, these clips explain my foundation-first philosophy—you have to understand the music and the instruments before you can truly move to it.
Finding Your Flow
My solo practice isn't just about looking perfect or hitting every count. It is how I break out of ruts and stay inspired. You will notice that many of these sessions are unpolished; that is intentional. Dance should be a conversation with the music, whether it is the complex layer of the clave, the conga, or the simple melody of a track.
Why Practice Matters
I encourage all my students, whether you are picking up Salsa On2 or just starting with basic footwork, to dedicate time to 'movement for the sake of movement.' Here is what these sessions are about:
- Musicality: Learning to listen for the instruments, not just the beat.
- De-stressing: Using movement to clear the mind.
- Growth: Recording your own practice is the fastest way to spot where your posture or technique needs a tweak.
