Naina Maithani: Landscapes of the Mind
Abstract color-scapes exploring memory, the spiritual, and the subtle textures of the Himalayas.
About Naina Maithani: Landscapes of the Mind
These canvases reward patience. You will notice that the textures and color transitions shift depending on your viewing angle, revealing depth that remains hidden from a distance. Because she uses such subtle layering, the work feels different in low light compared to daylight, effectively changing the mood of a room throughout the day.
Naina Maithani does not paint landscapes in the traditional sense. Her work is a visual record of memory, rooted in her time in the Himalayas and her travels across Vietnam and Doha. When you look at her canvases, you are looking at emotional states captured through color.
The Technical Approach
Maithani works primarily with acrylics on canvas, focusing on the interplay of transparency and light. She builds her compositions through meticulous, slow layering of tones. This technique creates a luminous, breathing quality on the canvas. Some works feature subtle metallic elements, such as gold, that catch the light and add unexpected sparkle, while others rely on the depth of matte pigments.
Viewing the Work
Her paintings are experiential. The texture is often three-dimensional or implies depth, meaning the work evolves as you move past it. We recommend placing these works in areas with natural light, as the changing sun throughout the day subtly alters the perception of her gradients.
Choosing for Your Space
Whether you are adding to a growing collection or searching for a first significant piece, we can help. These works, ranging from intimate 26x39 inch canvases to expansive 60x60 inch statement pieces, require an understanding of scale. We offer virtual mock-ups so you can see how a specific color-scape interacts with your walls before committing. If you are local, we invite you to our Infantry Road gallery to experience these textures firsthand.
