Expert Interior Design Tips for Your Home
Design is about how your space feels, not just how it looks. I share my practical tips here to help you make smarter, functional decisions for your home.
Ready for some kitchen design tips? In this video, I explain how to plan a functional kitchen by dividing it into six key zones: storage, preparation, cooking, appliances, serving, and washing.
Are you placing your lights correctly? I explain why you should plan your lighting along with your furniture layout to avoid common issues like glare on the TV or shadows in your workspace.
Choosing the right light temperature is key to setting the mood. I explain the difference between 3000K (warm), 4000K (neutral), and 6000K (cool) light and where to use each for the best effect in your home.
How big should your main door be? I share a simple thumb rule: maintain a 1:2 ratio of width to height for a visually pleasing and functional entrance.
Let's talk about bedroom colors. While the 60-30-10 rule still applies, I explain how you can be bolder in the bedroom by using an accent wall or brighter decor pieces to reflect your personality.
Did you know the season can affect your color choices? I explain the psychology of how we lean towards lighter colors in summer and warmer tones in winter, and why a guided approach is important for timeless design.
Watch me transform a room from drab to fab in this fun video. I show how adding the right furniture, decor, lighting, and greenery can completely change the look and feel of a space.
About this collection
One of the most common mistakes I see is planning lighting after the furniture is already in place. My advice? Plan your light points, switchboards, and furniture layout together. If you place a light right above your headboard or in a spot that casts shadows on your TV, no amount of expensive decor will fix it. Always think about where you will be standing and what you will be doing in that specific corner before you drill a single hole.
Great interior design is built on small, deliberate choices. Whether you are planning a renovation in Dehradun or building a new home, these principles will save you time and cost.
The Kitchen Workflow
I always tell my clients to think in zones. A functional kitchen is about minimizing steps. Divide your space into six areas: storage, preparation, cooking, appliances, serving, and washing. If you map these out before you finalize your cabinetry, your kitchen will feel effortless, whether you are making tea or cooking a full meal.
Lighting Basics
Light changes everything. For a cozy, relaxed mood in bedrooms or living areas, go for 3000K warm lights. If you want crisp task lighting for your kitchen or home office, 6000K is better. Never mix 3000K and 6000K in the same room unless you want a disjointed look. Plan your lights with your ceiling and furniture layout to avoid glare on your television or shadows on your countertops.
Door Design Rules
Doors are often overlooked, but they define your entrance. For a proportional look, follow the 1:2 ratio of width to height. If your door height is 7 feet, keep the width around 3.5 feet. If you need a wider opening, opt for double leaves or slide-and-fold mechanisms. If you want a seamless look, ask your contractor about concealed hinges and hidden door closers. They cost a bit more but make the entrance look clean and high-end.
The 60-30-10 Rule
This is my favorite rule for color. Use 60 percent of a dominant neutral color, 30 percent of a secondary color, and 10 percent of an accent color. In bedrooms, you can break this rule slightly to add more personality, but always keep a guided approach so your space feels balanced.
