Funktion Design

We are a multi-disciplinary design studio practicing architecture, interiors, and urbanism. Our work is driven by conceptual clarity and a true-to-material philosophy, creating functional and inspiring spaces where structure is honestly expressed.

This is the Nairy Residence, a home designed for three generations on a trapezoidal corner site. The structure acts as a protective fortress at street level, while the upper levels open up, becoming porous to the surrounding light and landscape. The curved concrete roof and exposed brick volumes are a direct expression of this dual concept.

My own studio at dusk, conceived as a translucent lantern framed by a mature rain tree. The design is an honest expression of its structure, with three robust concrete portals supporting suspended galleries. It is a living example of my belief in open, evolving spaces that foster creativity.

In the Nairy Residence, I create intimate moments of connection with the outdoors. This bedroom features a deep bay window seat, a quiet perch that frames the lush greenery outside, transforming a simple window into a personal retreat and filling the space with soft, natural light.

The main staircase is a central sculptural element within the Nairy Residence. A bold, green-painted steel beam supports the structure, creating a visual contrast with the raw brick wall and drawing the eye upwards towards a circular skylight, which bathes the double-height volume in daylight.

The Slate House, my studio, is designed to coexist with its urban, natural environment. Ultra-high-performance concrete fins create a rhythmic facade, providing shade to staggered balconies that offer views of the adjacent rain trees. The building engages in a direct dialogue with the street and the sky.

This corporate office for a concrete equipment manufacturer uses patterned, form-finished concrete as its primary skin. The building's facade is a direct reflection of the client's products and technology, with deep, cantilevered planes that provide passive shading from the harsh western sun.

The Interlocking House extension features sliding folding partitions that dissolve the boundary between inside and out. The bedroom transforms from an intimate, enclosed space into a large, semi-open tropical veranda. A butterfly roof with a central spout channels rainwater into a lily pond, connecting the home to the cycles of nature.

A complete living room set designed for the Nairy residence. The sofas feature an exposed wooden frame with delicate cane weaving, demonstrating our principle of structural honesty. The accompanying coffee and side tables use slender steel legs to create a sense of lightness, balancing the solid forms of the seating.

The dining area at the Nairy residence, featuring a custom solid wood dining table and upholstered chairs. The design emphasizes clean lines and material integrity, creating a functional and elegant space that connects seamlessly with the outdoors.

A detail shot of our studio workstation table. The slender steel rods are not just decorative; they are woven to represent the actual force diagrams of the structure, making the engineering itself the primary aesthetic feature. This is a core tenet of our design approach.

A large conference table designed for our studio's gallery space. The piece features a raw, form finished concrete top set on minimalist steel legs, showcasing our work with industrial materials for commercial and office environments.

The main staircase at the Nairy residence, designed as a key architectural marker. The structure uses a folded white steel plate for the stringer and solid wood for the treads, creating a minimalist and sculptural element that is both light and strong.

This aerial view of our competition entry for the Hangzhou Arena encapsulates my approach to master planning. The design establishes a clear dialogue between the high-density urban district and the natural topography of the adjacent hills, with circulation pathways defining the flow of public space.

At the Ajax Engineering campus, individual buildings like this cafeteria and cloakroom are designed as distinct architectural forms that contribute to the whole. The cantilevered roof and strategic window placements are not just aesthetic choices; they are part of the larger campus identity.

Campus connectivity is a critical component of my master planning strategy. This bridge at the Ajax facility is a key artery, linking production and ancillary buildings to ensure seamless operational flow and pedestrian movement, demonstrating how infrastructure becomes an integral part of the architectural expression.

I design spaces that are intuitive to navigate. This view showcases the vertical circulation core at the Ajax campus, where intersecting staircases and bridges create a dynamic and efficient connection between different levels and buildings, encouraging interaction and movement.

A master plan must create a sense of place. This rendering of the Hangzhou Arena illustrates how the structure interacts with its environment at dusk, becoming a landmark that serves both its primary function as a sports venue and its civic role as a public gathering space.

The arrival experience is a planned sequence. Here at the Ajax office block, a carefully landscaped stone pathway guides visitors from the green campus grounds to the building entrance, demonstrating my principle of integrating nature and architecture from the very first step.

My Story

We’re Funktion Design, Bangalore folks who like to mess around with ideas, not just buildings. Our own studio’s got floating galleries and chunky concrete bits – all open, all about letting thoughts bounce. We’re big on keeping things real: concrete as it is, steel that looks like steel, wood that feels like home. Sometimes we’ll take a courtyard house (totti mane) and twist it for city life. Awards are nice, but it’s the daily play with space that keeps us hooked. And ya, we don’t mind a good laugh when work’s done.

My Work

All-round Design Studio - We do architecture, interior design, urban design, furniture, and master planning for big campuses.

True-to-Material Approach - Raw concrete architecture, steel, wood – we let the materials speak, nothing fake or hidden.

Rooted in Context - Modern, yes, but we love reinventing old-school stuff like contemporary courtyard house design for today’s cities.

Spaces that Breathe - Nature-integrated workspace, lots of light, open air, and views – we want places to feel alive.

From Homes to Campuses - Big or small, home or factory, we dig unique design problems and love a good challenge.
