Striking Foliage and Rare Leaves for Your Home
Leaves can be just as striking as flowers. I collect and cultivate foliage with interesting textures, patterns, and shapes that add life to any indoor space, from rare Calatheas to velvety Begonias.
A perfect, heart-shaped leaf of the Tibouchina grandifolia. The entire leaf is covered in soft, silvery hairs, giving it a velvety texture that you just want to touch.
The incredible texture of a Begonia leaf with its frilly, red-tinged edges. Begonias come in an astonishing variety of shapes and colors, and I love curating the more unusual ones.
This Calathea showcases its stunning striped leaves, which look almost hand-painted. These plants are often called 'prayer plants' because their leaves fold up at night.
The deep purple, triangular leaves of the Oxalis triangularis, or Purple Shamrock. This plant is fascinating to watch as its leaves open and close in response to light.
The beautiful variegated leaves of a Nasturtium plant. The splashes of cream on the round, lily-pad-like leaves make this a unique and attractive trailing or climbing plant.
This is the Phyllodium longipes, a rare plant with unique, cascading foliage that resembles a chain of leaves. It's a true conversation starter for any plant collector.
The large, palmate leaves of the Fatsia japonica, or Japanese Aralia. This is a great plant for adding a bold, architectural element to a shady spot in the garden or a cool room indoors.
A climbing plant with beautifully patterned leaves, likely a Monstera dubia in its juvenile form. As it climbs, its leaves lie flat against the surface, creating a shingling effect.
A snapshot of the diverse foliage in my nursery. You can see the contrasting colors and textures of different plants like the purple Persian Shield and various groundcovers.
The star-shaped foliage of a Schefflera plant, also known as an Umbrella Plant. This is a popular and easy-to-care-for houseplant that adds a lush, tropical vibe.
About Striking Foliage & Unique Leaves
Before any foliage plant leaves my nursery, I check it for active growth patterns and structural health. Whether you are looking for the shingling effect of a climbing Monstera or the delicate textures of a Begonia, every plant here is hardened off to ensure it does not struggle with the transition to your home environment.
Foliage plants offer a consistent, year-round aesthetic that flowering plants cannot match. At my nursery in Mysore, I focus on varieties that bring unique geometry and color into your living space.
Why Choose Foliage Plants?
Unlike flowering plants that have a specific bloom cycle, foliage plants provide texture and pattern every day. My collection ranges from the deep, triangular leaves of the Oxalis triangularis to the painterly stripes of Calathea varieties. These plants are ideal for indoor settings because many of them are specifically adapted to lower-light or indirect-light environments.
My Selection Criteria
I source and grow these plants with a focus on:
- Leaf Integrity: I prioritize species with distinctive markings, such as variegated Nasturtium or the spoon-shaped leaves of Peperomia obtusifolia.
- Adaptability: Every plant is grown in a custom soilless aroid mix (using perlite, orchid bark, and coco-chips) to prevent root rot, which is common in houseplant care.
- Hardiness: Plants are hardened off in local conditions before they are made available for sale or shipping, ensuring they are robust enough for long-distance delivery across India.
Care Tips for Unique Leaves
- Humidity: Many patterned foliage plants, especially Calathea and Begonia, thrive in higher humidity. If you live in a dry climate, grouping your plants together helps them create their own micro-climate.
- Light: Most of these varieties prefer bright, indirect light. Direct harsh sunlight often burns variegated leaves or fades the color patterns.
- Soil: Use well-draining mixes. If you are unsure about the soil mix for a specific plant, I provide guidance on watering and substrate needs with every purchase.
