Mandala art is all about peace and precision. Whether you are a beginner or looking to refine your grid work, here are the techniques that helped me go from doodling on paper to painting professional murals.

Here are my top 3 do's and don'ts for creating better mandalas. These quick tips on layout, pencil marks, and using different pen sizes can make a huge difference in your final piece.

The foundation of any great mandala is a perfect grid. In this video, I share three essential things to ensure your grid is symmetrical and your final artwork is balanced.

About Learn With Me: Tips & Techniques

The secret to a balanced mandala isn't a steady hand—it's the grid. If you skip the measurement stage, your patterns will lean and the symmetry breaks. I always advise using the lightest possible pencil pressure for your guide lines so they erase clean without smudging your ink; it’s the small detail that separates a casual sketch from a clean, professional piece.

Why the Grid Matters

Many beginners jump straight into drawing patterns, but that’s where things get messy. A precise grid provides the architecture your mandala needs to grow. Start by marking your center point with absolute care—if that's off by even a millimeter, the entire circular symmetry will be skewed. I use a compass and ruler to map out light angles, which allows me to maintain spacing even as the design expands outward.

Tools for Depth and Texture

One of the biggest mistakes I see is using a single pen size for the entire artwork. To give your mandala dimension, you need contrast. I switch between different fine-liner tip sizes—using 0.1 for the intricate, tight patterns near the center and a 0.5 or 0.8 for the bold outer borders. This creates a visual 'pop' that makes the art look sophisticated.

Transitioning to Walls

When I moved from my sketchbook to painting murals in spaces across Pune and beyond, the biggest adjustment was scale. On a wall, you can't just rotate your paper. You have to move your body. It takes practice to keep your lines straight when you’re standing up, which is why I always practice on paper until the muscle memory is locked in.

My Teaching Approach

Whether you join my cafe workshops in Pune or my online sessions, we don't focus on perfection. We focus on the process. My goal is to teach you how to set up your tools, handle your pens, and find that meditative 'flow state' that makes mandala art so therapeutic. If you’re ready to start your own art journey, let's connect.
