About Custom Paver Walkways
A paver walkway is only as strong as what lies underneath it. I excavate 6 inches down, clear the soil, and install a 4-inch compacted aggregate base. This deep foundation prevents the stone from sinking or shifting when the ground freezes and thaws. I finish every path with polymeric sand in the joints to lock the stones together and stop weeds from taking root.
When I build a walkway, I am thinking about two things: how it looks and how it handles our local climate. In Central Ohio, the ground moves quite a bit between winter freezes and spring thaws. If you just lay stone on top of dirt, it will eventually buckle. My process focuses on heavy-duty preparation so you are not resetting stones in two years.
I offer a few different options for the finish, depending on what you like. We can do classic rectangle pavers for a clean, traditional look, or use hexagonal or cobblestone patterns if you want more character. I also make sure to edge every project properly. That means using concrete haunching along the perimeter to keep the whole path in place.
For the finishing touch, I use polymeric sand for the joints. It hardens up to keep ants and weeds out, so you are not spending your weekend pulling grass out of your walkway.
