Mentalism and the Creative Process: My TEDx Talks & Media Features
I do not just perform magic; I love discussing the psychology and creative philosophy that makes it work. Here is a look at my TEDx talks and podcast conversations where I dive into the craft.
On the iconic red circle, giving my TEDx talk. It was a privilege to share my thoughts on creativity, fear, and how the principles of magic can apply to our everyday lives.
A clip from my appearance on the Aleena Dissects podcast. Here, I'm demonstrating my skills by guessing the unique name of the host's childhood friend, Srujani, whom she hadn't seen in years.
What's the difference between magic and mentalism? In this podcast clip, I explain how I see it: magic bends physical reality, while mentalism is magic for the mind.
A moment from my TEDx talk, where I quoted one of my favorite authors, Elizabeth Gilbert, on living a creative life. Her book "Big Magic" has been a huge inspiration for me.
Another shot from my TEDx talk, "Big Magic," where I combined storytelling, performance, and personal philosophy to explore the nature of creativity.
A still from my TEDx performance, capturing a moment of levitation and balance. The talk was about letting go of fear and embracing the unknown, a core principle in both magic and life.
Another angle from the Aleena Dissects podcast, showing the host's reaction when I correctly reveal her friend's name on the whiteboard.
Imagination is the beginning of creation. On this podcast, I used only the host's imagination to have her narrow down 52 cards to one, the Queen of Hearts, which was the only card inside a matchbox I held from the start.
About In the Spotlight: Talks & Media Features
People often ask me if mentalism is just a series of tricks. It is not. As you will see in my talks, it is an exercise in empathy and observation. When I am on stage or on a podcast, I am not just showing you a spectacle; I am pulling back the curtain on how we connect and why a little bit of mystery makes life better.
The Intersection of Magic and Life
For me, magic is a tool for storytelling. When I stand on a stage like the TEDx red circle, my goal isn't to fool the audience, but to invite them to question their perception of reality. My talks are rooted in the belief that the principles used by an illusionist—focus, redirection, and vulnerability—are surprisingly applicable to our daily lives.
Why Mentalism Matters
In my conversations, whether on the Aleena Dissects podcast or during my keynotes, I often distinguish between magic and mentalism. If magic is about bending physical reality, mentalism is about engaging with the mind. It is about understanding the subtle cues that tell us who someone is, what they are feeling, and what they might be thinking. It turns a room of strangers into a group of people sharing a singular, genuine moment of wonder.
My Philosophy
I often reference writers like Elizabeth Gilbert because her perspective on creativity resonates with my own 'fail forward' approach. I believe that being a magician in Mumbai is not just about the sleight of hand; it is about staying curious, being willing to look foolish, and finding the 'magic' in the mundane. Whether I am bending a coin or guessing a childhood friend's name, the magic is not the trick itself. The magic is the conversation that starts the moment the trick is over.
Chirag Jethwaney
I am Chirag. I read minds for a living, but I get the most kick out of explaining why it works. When I am not performing, I am writing, speaking, or figuring out how to bend reality in new ways.
