About Marapachi Bommai: Our Signature Dolls
Ordering these dolls is a personal process because I hand-stitch every tiny saree and dhoti to match your event colours. Please plan your order at least 2 weeks in advance so I have enough time to perfect the beadwork and jewellery for your specific wedding or baby shower display.
The Tradition Behind the Dolls
Marapachi Bommai are more than just wooden dolls. In South Indian culture, these traditional toys, often made from red wood or country wood, are believed to carry auspicious energy—what I call 'nalla vibration'—into a new home or marriage. For the past 10 years, I have been keeping this art alive by giving these classic figures a modern touch.
My Customization Process
Every pair I create is unique. I take standard 10-12 inch wooden dolls and transform them into a representation of a bride and groom or a festive couple.
- Attire: I stitch miniature silk sarees with perfect pleats, and dhotis or sherwanis for the male dolls, matching the colour palette of your actual wedding or ceremony.
- Detailing: Using stone-work jewellery, maang tikka, and braided hair (jadai) with clips, I ensure each doll looks ready for a celebration.
- Versatility: These dolls are perfect for your wedding trousseau, Golu display, or as a thoughtful gift for baby showers and housewarmings.
Renting vs. Owning
I understand that sometimes you might only need these beautiful pieces for a single day of festivities. I offer both purchase and rental options for my thematic doll sets. Whether you want to keep them as a keepsake or just use them for your ceremony, I am flexible.
Delivery and Care
I am based in Coimbatore and Bengaluru, and I ship these delicate handmade items across Tamil Nadu. Since they are crafted with fabric and stone work, handle them with care, and keep them away from direct water to preserve the vibrant silk and glue work. If you have a specific theme in mind, just let me know, and we can discuss how to make it happen.
