Mastering the Art of Tabla
We explore the rhythmic depths of Hindustani classical music, guiding students from foundational syllables to the complexities of solo performance. Join us in Koramangala for a disciplined journey through taal.
Our tabla students practicing compositions under the guidance of their Guru. This session focuses on Nagada bols, which are specialized sounds from the bass drum, demonstrating the depth and variety of rhythmic training we offer, from basic syllables to complex layakari.
A glimpse into a classroom practice session where our tabla students are attempting a Gat. This showcases the collaborative and focused environment we cultivate, where students learn and grow together under the watchful eye of their Guru.
A candid moment of riyaz before a performance, where our tabla Guru Shri Ashwiniji guides a senior vocal student through an atidhrut laya. This fine-tuning is where the magic happens, preparing our students for the stage.
Our Guru, Shri Ashwin M P, demonstrates the foundational differences between Sultaal and Chautaal. This video explains the matras and vibhags of each taal, providing a clear, educational look into the rhythmic structures used in Dhrupad music.
A continued demonstration of Sultaal, a 10-matra taal. Here, our Guru showcases the taal in ekgun, dugun, tigun, and chaugun, illustrating how tempo and rhythmic density are developed in practice.
The final part of our taal demonstration series, focusing on Chautaal. This video shows the 12-matra cycle in varying speeds, highlighting the similarities and differences in bols when compared to Sultaal.
About this collection
In our sessions, you are not merely learning to strike the drum; you are learning the intricate language of bols. Whether you are struggling to maintain consistent hand positioning during ekgun or finding the exact resonance for nagada sounds, our Guru corrects your posture in real time. We emphasize the physical discipline of riyaz long before you attempt complex layakari, ensuring your foundation is stable enough for the stage.
Building a Foundation in Rhythm
Learning the tabla at Sangeet Sadhana is a rigorous exercise in patience and precision. We begin with the basics of swara and taal mathematics, teaching students how to articulate clear bols and understand the structure of the rhythmic cycle. Beginners typically spend the initial months focusing on hand positioning and the production of crisp, ringing tones on the dayan and resonant bass on the bayan.
Advanced Mastery and Improvisation
As students progress beyond the foundational gat, we introduce the nuances of layakari, or rhythmic improvisation. You will move from ekgun (single tempo) through to chaugun (quadruple tempo), learning to navigate complex taals like Teentaal, Sultaal, and Chautaal. Our approach goes beyond the physical act of playing; we analyze the mathematical structure and the historical gharana context of each composition.
The Role of Performance
True understanding of rhythm requires application. We integrate live accompaniment sessions into our curriculum, where students learn to support vocalists and instrumentalists. Our monthly baithak series provides the necessary performance exposure, allowing students to experience the energy of a live setting within the intimate, supportive environment of our Koramangala studio. Whether you are an absolute beginner or looking to refine your solo performance, our Guru-Shishya approach ensures that your education is deeply personal and technically sound.
Sangeet Sadhana
We, led by Guru Ashwin M P, guide each student through the long, disciplined path of the tabla. We do not rush the process; we focus on the integrity of every bol and the deep, spiritual discipline required to master the rhythm.
