The Heart of Kalangan: My Dance and My Legacy

A small collection of my most cherished moments, from the quiet intensity of abhinaya to the joy of dancing with my students. This is the heart of what I do.

For me, Bharatanatyam is not just about movement, but about the stories we tell with our face and heart. This is abhinaya, the art of expression, which is at the core of everything I teach and perform. It's a quiet, internal process of living a character on stage.

A moment of dynamic energy from my solo production, "Moham". This pose captures the physical discipline and grace that Bharatanatyam demands, showcasing the culmination of years of training in a single, powerful movement on stage.

This is the beautiful result of our shared dedication. My senior disciples performing a Tillana, their movements and hearts perfectly in sync. I choreograph group performances that are not just technically sound but also full of life and unity.

Storytelling is the soul of dance. Here, I am sharing the story of Meera with my students during a workshop. Understanding the context and emotion of a character is the secret to true and heartfelt abhinaya, a skill I love to nurture in my disciples.

This is my Amma, my guru, Smt. Jamuna Krishnan. Everything I am as a dancer comes from her. Her legacy lives on through the rare compositions she created, which I am blessed to pass on to the next generation.

A black and white capture from my performance "Moham". Even in stillness, the dance speaks. This image shows a moment of deep expression, where every gesture tells a part of the story.

The energy in the studio just before a big show is electric. Here are my students in a final rehearsal for our Kalangan Annual Day. This is where we refine every detail to ensure the group choreography is powerful and cohesive on stage.

About this collection

People often ask if my training is only about getting the steps right. It isn't. When you join my studio, we spend as much time on abhinaya, the art of expression, as we do on footwork. I believe dance is storytelling, so we will work together to find your own voice, whether you are preparing for a solo performance or learning these traditional pieces for the first time.

At Kalangan, our practice is rooted in the tradition passed down by my mother and guru, Smt. Jamuna Krishnan. Whether you are seeking solo choreography for a stage show or looking for group training, my studio in Dwarka offers a space for serious, intentional dance practice. We do not just focus on the mechanics of the steps. We dive into the bhava, or the emotion, behind the music.

Many of my students come to me specifically to learn North Indian Bhakti poetry compositions, a rare facet of the dance I strive to keep alive. We work on the micro-expressions, the eye movements, and the narrative strength of your performance. My goal is to help you connect deeply with the character you are portraying on stage.

I treat my students like family. If you are preparing for a performance, we look at everything from your stage presence to your costume aesthetic to ensure you feel confident. This journey is as much about the trust and love we build in the studio as it is about the final performance. I invite you to reach out if you want to explore the history and emotion behind these movements.
