A look into how I shape spaces that breathe, blending nature with structure to create environments that tell stories and invite connection.
This high-angle view of the Sunrise restaurant project captures the essence of my biophilic design approach. I created a multi-level garden oasis where seating areas are nestled amongst lush foliage, blurring the line between a building and a landscape.
This film explores the Dr. Vishnuvardhan Memorial, a project close to my heart. I discuss how the design honors a cinematic legacy while creating a vibrant, living space for the local community, blending architecture with nature and social purpose.
The curved brick jali wall at the Dr. Vishnuvardhan Memorial is a key element of the design. It creates a semi-permeable screen that filters light and air, forming shaded, in-between spaces for people to gather, reflecting my goal to design for community interaction.
For this private residence, the goal was to create a tranquil oasis. The design seamlessly integrates the swimming pool and deck with the surrounding palm grove, using clean lines and natural materials to craft a space for quiet relaxation.
This rendering of the MSR Tower in Bangalore shows my vision for the future of urban workplaces. The design incorporates extensive green terraces and a kinetic facade, bringing nature and flexibility into a high-rise commercial building.
The facade of the proposed MCA Clubhouse accommodation block features undulating balconies draped in greenery. This design provides each room with a private, shaded terrace while creating a living, breathing exterior that connects the building to the landscape.
This kinetic facade features movable metal panels in warm, earthy tones. The design is not just aesthetic; it is a functional system that allows occupants to control the amount of sunlight entering the space, demonstrating my focus on passive and user-centric design.
The Subko Ajji House project involved creating a modern coffee house within a traditional courtyard setting. I used a distinct color palette and materials that respect the existing structure while establishing a fresh, contemporary identity.
I am deeply honored that my work on the Dr. Vishnuvardhan Memorial was recognized with a 2024 Monocle Design Award. This acknowledgment affirms my commitment to creating architecture that is both beautiful and meaningful.
About Featured
My design process starts not with a floor plan, but with the site's sun-path and wind direction. Before we move a single brick, I study how light will fall across your living room or office at noon versus sunset. This site-specific analysis is how I achieve passive cooling, ensuring the building stays naturally comfortable throughout the year.
Architecture, for me, is about creating a living canvas. When I look at a site, I am not thinking about how to maximize square footage; I am thinking about where the shadows will land and where people will naturally want to sit and talk. My work, whether it is a private residence or a public memorial like the Dr. Vishnuvardhan Memorial, relies on what I call slow architecture—designs that take their time, allowing nature to soften the hard edges of concrete and steel over the years.
I prioritize the in-between zones—the lobbies, courtyards, and pathways where real social interaction happens. In my residential projects, this often means creating a central green court or a biophilic transition zone that brings the outside in. For commercial spaces, like the MSR Tower in Bangalore, I integrate kinetic facades that allow you to control light and ventilation, keeping the space functional yet connected to the environment.
I am drawn to honest materials. Wire-cut bricks, exposed concrete, lime plaster, and Kota stone provide a tactile warmth that mass-produced finishes cannot replicate. If you are looking for a space that is flexible, sustainable, and tells your story rather than just filling a plot of land, let’s talk about your site.
M9 Design Studio
I am Nischal, the lead architect behind M9 Design Studio. My approach is simple: I build spaces that feel alive by letting nature lead the way. I spend as much time designing the empty space between walls as I do the walls themselves, ensuring your home or office is built for people to connect and grow.
