Advanced Treatments for Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, impacts daily comfort and confidence in ways that are hard to ignore. I use a structured, medical approach to diagnose the root cause of your sweating and develop a tailored treatment plan, ranging from advanced injections to long-term reduction procedures.
Excessive underarm sweating, as shown in this image, is a primary symptom of hyperhidrosis. It's a medical condition for which effective, evidence-based treatments exist to restore comfort and confidence.
This animation explains the physiology behind primary focal hyperhidrosis. It shows how overactive nerves stimulate sweat glands, typically affecting areas like the underarms, palms, and soles. A correct diagnosis is the first step to effective treatment.
The miraDry system is a device-based treatment I use for longer-term sweat reduction. It works through thermal microwave ablation, safely targeting and eliminating sweat glands in the underarm area with a built-in cooling system for patient comfort.
For some patients, oral medications can be a part of the treatment plan. This clip shows anticholinergic pills, which work systemically to reduce sweating. I carefully select and monitor these medications due to potential side effects.
In refractory cases where other treatments are not effective, surgical options may be considered. This video depicts procedures like surgical sympathectomy or local excision, which are performed after referral to a specialist.
About Treatments for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
Before jumping into any procedure, I insist on a thorough consultation. Excessive sweating is not always primary hyperhidrosis; sometimes it is linked to other medical factors that we need to rule out first. We sit down to grade the severity and discuss whether Botox, miraDry, or oral medication is the safest and most effective path forward for your specific lifestyle.
Managing hyperhidrosis requires more than just masking the symptoms. When you visit my clinic in Juhu, we start with a diagnostic session to distinguish between primary focal hyperhidrosis—which typically affects the underarms, palms, and soles—and secondary causes.
My approach to hyperhidrosis treatment follows a staged medical protocol:
- Botulinum Toxin (Botox) Therapy: This is a common and highly effective option for underarm sweat. I use 100 units of Botulinum Toxin Type A, mapping the area with a Starch-Iodine test to ensure uniform coverage. This typically provides 6-8 months of relief.
- miraDry (Microwave Ablation): For patients seeking a longer-term solution, I offer miraDry. It uses thermal microwave energy to safely target and eliminate sweat glands in the underarm area. It is a non-surgical procedure with a built-in cooling system to protect your skin.
- Oral Medications: In certain cases, anticholinergic medications can be prescribed. These work systemically to reduce sweating, but they require careful monitoring due to potential side effects, which we will discuss during your consultation.
- Surgical Options: If your case is refractory and does not respond to conservative treatments, we may discuss surgical sympathectomy or local excision options. In such instances, I coordinate a specialist referral to ensure you receive the safest care.
My primary goal is to restore your comfort. We do not apply one-size-fits-all fixes; every protocol is designed based on your history, the severity of the condition, and your long-term goals.
