I bring the soul of Carnatic music to you, moving beyond the concert stage with stories, live veena demonstrations, and interactive sessions that make classical music feel like a conversation.

A closer view of the stage during my lecture-demonstration at the Musica Sacra festival in Germany. It’s an intimate setup where I can connect directly with the audience and my fellow artists.

Sharing the stage with my colleagues during the workshop portion of the Musica Sacra festival. These sessions are about dialogue and sharing different perspectives on sacred music.

A view from the audience during my workshop in Germany. It is so rewarding to see people from different backgrounds completely engaged in learning about Carnatic music.

Performing with my veena at an outdoor SPIC MACAY concert at Christ University. These events for students are informal, energetic, and a wonderful way to connect with the youth.

Explaining a musical concept during the SPIC MACAY concert. I believe in making these sessions interactive, breaking down complex ideas into something everyone can appreciate.

A happy moment with my accompanying artists after our performance for the enthusiastic young audience at Christ University. Their energy is truly infectious.

Addressing the audience at the Soma Festival, held in a beautiful amphitheater at the Shankara Foundation. The stage, with its dramatic lighting and water feature, made it a memorable evening.

About this collection

My sessions are designed to break down barriers, whether I am at a university in Bangalore or a festival stage in Germany. I do not just play; I explain the rhythm cycles, show you the mechanics of the Tarangini Veena, and invite you to participate in rhythm clapping exercises. It is an immersive, musical adda where even absolute beginners find themselves completely hooked.

I believe that Carnatic music belongs everywhere. Over the years, I have taken these lecture-demonstrations to diverse venues, from local classroom settings in Malleshwaram to international festival stages like Musica Sacra. Each session is built to be accessible, stripping away the intimidation factor often associated with classical arts.

How I Structure a Session

Most lecture-demonstrations last about 90 minutes. I split this time into two parts: a 60-minute presentation and 30 minutes for Q&A. I bring my custom Tarangini Veena, and I am usually joined by a professional percussionist on the Mridangam to demonstrate complex rhythm cycles live.

We cover:

  • The history of the Saraswati Veena.
  • A live demonstration of how my custom instrument differs from traditional ones.
  • A rendition of 3 to 4 classical compositions with live narration.

Interactive Learning

These are not dry talks. I want you to feel the music. We usually include a rhythm clapping exercise where the audience participates, helping everyone understand the underlying math and emotion in Carnatic music. Whether your audience consists of college students, corporate teams, or international festival-goers, I adapt the delivery language to English or Kannada to ensure everyone stays engaged.

If you have a venue with floor seating or a standard stage, I can make it work. All I need is a sound system with vocal mics and an instrument line, and we are ready to turn your event into a musical experience.

I am Suma, and for me, the veena is not just an instrument but a gateway to deep, resonant storytelling. I love taking Carnatic music out of traditional halls and into spaces where people are curious, whether it is a college campus or an international festival stage. Let us create a musical dialogue together.
