Treating Pigmentation and Dark Spots
Hyperpigmentation is common, but it is not a mystery to be solved with quick-fix creams. Let us look at what is actually causing those patches so we can treat the root, not just the symptom.
This series shows a patient's progress over five months in treating significant hyperpigmentation. With consistent, steroid-free depigmenting peels and laser sessions, we achieved a remarkable improvement in skin clarity and tone.
Just one month can make a difference. This image shows the initial improvement in facial pigmentation after starting a customized treatment plan during the winter, a time when skin can be prone to dullness.

In this feature for Healthshots, I discuss the causes of hyperpigmentation, or dark patches, which result from excess melanin. Professional guidance is key to treating this common skin condition effectively.
About Treating Pigmentation & Dark Spots
Most people visit me after trying three different over-the-counter creams that only made their skin more sensitive. Before we even discuss a peel or a laser session, we need a 3D skin analysis to understand if your pigmentation is caused by melanin, hormonal changes like insulin resistance, or simple barrier damage. We do not just slap a treatment on your skin; we fix the underlying imbalance first.
Pigmentation is not a single condition, which is why standard creams rarely work. In my clinic, I often see patients who have used steroid-based creams that have thinned their skin, creating a cycle of irritation and darker patches. That is why I refuse to offer generic packages. Whether your dark spots are caused by melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne, or even insulin resistance, the approach must be medical.
We start with a thorough history. Sometimes, the issue is not the skin itself but a systemic factor like a Vitamin B12 deficiency or hormonal imbalance. Once we identify the cause, we move to treatments that are safe for Indian skin tones. This includes Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser toning, which breaks down excess pigment without damaging the surrounding tissue, or depigmenting peels that work on the deeper layers of the epidermis.
My focus is always on long-term health. We avoid anything that strips the skin barrier. The goal is to safely lift the pigment while building your skin's resilience so you do not deal with this cycle again. If you have been struggling with stubborn marks, the first step is to stop the irritants and get a proper diagnosis.
