Garden Bed Design and Planting Services
Refreshing your outdoor space is often just about cleaning up the edges and choosing the right plants. I help with everything from quick garden bed renovations to installing new privacy screens.
This before and after shows a simple spring cleanup. Just cleaning out the bed, adding fresh mulch, and placing a landscape boulder makes a big difference to the side of a house.
Here I've just finished creating a new garden bed using large landscape boulders as a border. The new grass seed is protected by straw and will fill in soon.
This is what a new rock and mulch bed looks like after it's completed. It's a low maintenance solution that adds a lot of character to the edge of a driveway.
This is an after shot of a garden bed renovation. I used a mix of evergreen shrubs and a weeping tree to create privacy along the fence line.
Another view of the same privacy planting project. The stone border helps to keep the lawn separate from the mulch bed.
After a new fence was installed, this homeowner wanted trees for privacy. I planted these pine trees which will grow to create a nice natural screen.
About Garden Bed & Planting Projects
When I tackle a garden bed renovation, I don't just clear the debris. I focus on the soil first, rototilling and adding organic manure to make sure your new plants actually have a foundation to thrive in rather than sitting in old, packed earth.
A well-planned garden bed does more than look nice. It needs to handle Ohio's weather and soil conditions to stay low-maintenance throughout the year.
My approach to planting starts with a site assessment. We look at the existing light, soil quality, and drainage. If you have an older home in the Columbus area, we often start by stripping away overgrown shrubs and weeds, then enriching the soil to give new life to the area. I use hardy shrubs like Hydrangeas or Ficus that fit the local climate, spacing them properly so they don't crowd each other as they mature.
For borders and clean-up, I prefer hand-cut or spade-cut edges rather than plastic edging. It looks cleaner and is easier to maintain with a mower. To finish the beds, I apply a 2 to 3 inch layer of hardwood mulch or river pebbles. This keeps moisture in, suppresses weeds, and creates that sharp contrast between the lawn and the planting area.
If you are looking for privacy, I help select and plant evergreen trees that provide year-round screening. For those who just want a refresh, we can incorporate focal point plants or small ornamental trees to add color without requiring a full-scale redesign.
