Green is not just one color. It is about how leaves catch the light and fill a space. We select plants with distinct textures and shapes to build depth that lasts.

A dense hedge of Calathea lutea, or Cigar Calathea. I use this for its height and the beautiful contrast between the green tops and bronze undersides of its leaves.

A thick border of Boston Ferns. Their delicate, feathery fronds create a soft texture that works well for lining pathways or as underplanting.

A mass planting of False Aralia (Plerandra elegantissima). Its fine, finger-like leaves create a unique, airy texture in the landscape.

The colorful new growth on these Calathea plants shows shades of pink and red, adding interest to a foliage-focused design.

A close-up of a new Calathea leaf unfurling, showing the fine vein details and the warm, golden color against a green backdrop.

A different view of the Calathea hedge, showing how it creates a solid, structural mass of green along a public walkway.

An upward shot looking through the translucent leaves of the Calathea, highlighting their color and structure against the sky.

The rich texture of a mixed foliage border, combining the broad leaves of Calathea with other green plants for a layered effect.

About Foliage & Textural Greens

When we choose plants for foliage, we look at how the leaf behaves in our Bengaluru climate. A Calathea might look great, but it needs specific shade and moisture to keep that bronze-green contrast. If you do not have the right spot, we will tell you straight, because a plant that thrives is better than one that just survives.
